Kawazu Bagatelle Park is an authentic French-style rose garden located in Kawazu Town, Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture. The park features an impressive collection of approximately 1,100 varieties and 6,000 rose bushes, creating an overwhelming scale and a rich, intoxicating fragrance that captivates every visitor. The garden's design, characterized by beautiful symmetrical geometric patterns, makes it a true paradise for rose lovers. The park opened on April 28, 2001. While it was originally operated by Kawazu Bagatelle Park Co., Ltd., the management has since transitioned to direct operation by Kawazu Town. It has been cherished for many years as a beautiful garden deeply rooted in the local community. Please note that due to changes in the management structure, there are plans for changes to the current name and management system by the end of fiscal year 2026; we recommend checking the official website for the latest information.
The greatest attraction is undoubtedly the vast rose garden. The sight of colorful roses blooming within the meticulously calculated geometric garden patterns is nothing short of breathtaking. Walking through the garden while enveloped in the scent of roses is a luxurious experience unique to this location. Additionally, the park features European-style architecture that harmonizes beautifully with the garden scenery. Since different varieties bloom at different times, you will discover something new every time you visit.
To experience the park at its most magnificent, we highly recommend visiting during the 'Flower Season.' Typically, from late April to late June, the roses reach their peak bloom, turning the park into a literal sea of roses. A benefit of this period is that there are no scheduled closing days, making it easy to plan your trip. During other seasons, you can still enjoy different varieties of roses in a more tranquil atmosphere. For those who prefer a quieter stroll, visiting on weekday mornings is recommended.
Beyond just viewing the scenery, you can engage your senses here. Popular activities include nature walks while breathing in the deep scent of roses and taking photogenic shots against the stunning backdrops. The geometric garden is a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts. Depending on the season, you may also encounter gardening items such as rose seedlings for sale, providing inspiration for your own home gardening.
Kawazu Town is an area rich in natural beauty within the Izu Peninsula. The nearby Kawazu River is famous for the 'Kawazu Cherry Blossoms' in spring. With easy access via the Izukyu Line, you can easily connect your visit to nearby hot spring resorts or coastal sightseeing. While the garden paths are relatively well-maintained, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, such as sneakers, as there are rose beds and uneven paths. Depending on the season, the sun can be quite strong, so bringing a hat, parasol, and water is advisable.
