Kawahara Castle (Oshiroyama Observatory) is a cultural information hub located in Kawahara-cho, Tottori City. The structure is designed in the style of a traditional Japanese castle tower (tenshukaku), with each floor dedicated to showcasing the natural beauty, history, and culture of the Kawahara region. From the top-floor terrace, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.
The site holds significant historical weight, known as a location where troops were stationed during the first Tottori Castle siege by Hashiba Hideyoshi in 1580. Historically, it is believed to have served as a fort for the Oburifude Yamashiro castle, defended by Takeda Takanobu. The area is also steeped in legend, specifically the tale of Yagami-hime from the Kojiki. Archaeological excavations conducted between 1991 and 1992 confirmed the site's historical importance, uncovering traces of castle walls (kuruwa) and moats.
The interior is organized by themes on each floor. The first floor serves as an information corner, using large photographic panels to introduce the nature and daily life of Kawahara-cho. On the third floor, visitors can experience the 'Magical Vision'—a 3D video presentation that brings the ancient Japanese love story of the Yagami-hime legend to life. The top-floor terrace provides an unobstructed view stretching as far as the Tottori Sand Dunes and the mountain ranges of the Chugoku Mountains.
The area surrounding the castle features Kawahara Central Park, which is home to approximately 800 plum trees, making it a beautiful spot for plum blossom viewing in the spring. At night, the castle is illuminated by 21 spotlights, serving as a striking local landmark. Please note that closing times vary by season: during the summer (April to September), the facility is open until 18:00, while in the winter (October to March), it closes at 17:00.
Visitors can learn about regional history and culture through detailed dioramas and digital displays. The 'Magical Vision' 3D screening is a standout feature, offering a unique visual way to experience local legends. The surrounding area also hosts seasonal events that allow visitors to connect deeply with the local natural environment.
Kawahara Central Park is perfectly maintained for leisurely strolls. Nearby, the scenic Mitaki Valley offers a rich natural environment. For those looking to relax, the nearby Yutaya Onsen provides a chance to enjoy the local hot spring culture alongside the historical sites.
Please note that there are no elevators inside the facility, so visitors should be prepared to use stairs. For those with limited mobility, an approach path is available near the observatory entrance. We ask that all visitors respect the historical exhibits and follow local etiquette during their visit.
