Kawakami Kyo is a breathtaking gorge located in Saga City, Saga Prefecture. Due to its exceptional beauty, it has long been affectionately known by locals as the "Arashiyama of Kyushu." The landscape is characterized by a dramatic topography where steep mountains rise on both sides, with the upper reaches of the Kase River flowing through the center. Because the scenery changes completely with each season, it remains a popular destination for tourists throughout the year.
This area has been cherished for its natural beauty since ancient times. In 1927, its magnificent landscape was officially recognized as one of the "One Hundred Best River Views in Japan." Additionally, in 1975, it was designated as part of the Kawakami Minata Prefectural Natural Park, playing a vital role in both nature conservation and tourism. The surrounding area is dotted with historic shrines and temples, serving as a place of relaxation for generations.
The greatest charm of Kawakami Kyo lies in its colorful seasonal transformations. In spring, beautiful cherry blossoms bloom, and the sight of approximately 300 koinobori (carp streamers) fluttering over the river creates a uniquely elegant spectacle. In summer, the lush greenery deepens, and the area hosts fireworks and lantern festivals. In autumn, the mountains turn into a vibrant tapestry of red and gold, offering a deeply emotional and serene atmosphere. Visitors can also discover the raw power of nature through the various large rock formations scattered along the river.
Spring (March–May) is the most spectacular time to visit, featuring the harmony of cherry blossoms and carp streamers. Summer (June–August) is perfect for enjoying the coolness of the water through riverside activities and summer festivals. Autumn (September–November) is characterized by the stunning colors of the changing leaves. For added relaxation, there are hot spring centers nearby where you can soak in the waters after a day of walking.
There are many ways to experience nature closely at Kawakami Kyo. A highlight is the sightseeing boat (yakata-bune) cruise, which offers a rare perspective of the gorge from near the water level. You can also explore the surrounding walking paths to discover ancient rocks and historic religious sites. For a taste of local culture, do not miss the "Shiratama Manju." The area around the gorge offers many ways to enrich your visit. You can enjoy Japanese gardens that showcase seasonal flowers, as well as historic temples and shrines. Since the terrain is naturally rugged, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that some local shops and facilities may only accept cash, so it is helpful to carry coins or small bills. If you plan to use the sightseeing boats, it is best to check the operating status in advance.
