The Kautaya Residence is a traditional house featuring the unique 'Kudo-zukuri' architectural style, which has been passed down in southern Saga Prefecture since ancient times. 'Kudo-zukuri' refers to a structure where the roof ridge curves into a 'C' shape, also known as 'Kagiya' locally. This architectural style is extremely rare even within Saga Prefecture today. As a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan, the residence is highly recognized for its significant architectural value, representing a perfect fusion of functionality and aesthetic beauty in traditional Japanese living.
While 'Kudo-zukuri' houses were once common dwellings in this region, they are gradually disappearing due to modernization. The Kautaya Residence was designated as an Important Cultural Property on February 5, 1974, due to its immense historical value. The structure preserves the wisdom of ancient Japanese life and the architectural techniques developed to adapt to the local natural environment. Through its preserved and restored state, the residence serves as a vital link to the past, conveying the lifestyle and ingenuity of old Japanese farming villages to future generations.
The most striking feature is the unique roof structure and the internal spatial configuration. The building has a floor area of approximately 79 square meters and includes tatami-matted rooms, an 'Omote' area with a bamboo floor and a small sunken hearth (irori), and a spacious 22-tatami-mat earthen floor (doma) area. Additionally, original kitchen equipment such as the 'kamado' (traditional stove) is preserved, allowing visitors to visualize the daily cooking and living routines of the past. The one-of-a-kind spatial design is of extremely high architectural value.
The standard viewing hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to clearly observe the textures of the traditional materials and the intricate roof structure. For those wishing to use the facility for specific events (paid use), the site is accessible until 10:00 PM, offering a serene opportunity to experience the historical atmosphere in the quiet of the night. Regardless of the season, you can appreciate the calm atmosphere and the textures of the tatami, bamboo, and earthen walls.
Beyond simple observation, the Kautaya Residence can be 'used' as a venue under certain conditions. Groups of five or more people are permitted to use the space for a fee. Please note that if you intend to use fire (such as a hearth) during your visit, prior notification is mandatory. As this is a precious cultural asset, all activities must strictly adhere to the established rules and regulations to ensure preservation.
