Kawachi Funaike is a massive limestone cave (horizontal cave) located in Taga Town, Inami District, Shiga Prefecture. With a total length of approximately 10,020m, it is the 4th largest in Japan and one of the largest in the Kinki region. The cave was formed by the dissolution of limestone by water, creating an incredibly vast space. The most striking feature is the "Grand Hall," a monumental area measuring 60m in length, 20m in width, and 20m in height, which leaves visitors in awe. The temperature inside remains remarkably stable at an average of 11.3°C throughout the year. Historically, this constant temperature was utilized as a natural refrigerator for preserving items like seed potatoes and silkworm eggs.
The area is situated within the limestone belt of the northern Suzuka Mountains (Omi Karst region). The cave was formed from geological layers containing sediments from Permian coral reefs. In 1959, it was designated as a Natural Monument of Shiga Prefecture as "Kawachi no Funaike." Additionally, it has been protected as part of the Biwako Quasi-National Park since 1950. The site holds historical significance as a place where human wisdom met nature, utilizing the stable temperature for food preservation. Today, it is managed by the Kawachi Kanko Association to balance tourism with environmental conservation.
The primary highlight is the "Tourist Cave Section," where visitors are permitted to enter. The "Grand Hall" is particularly breathtaking, formed by a massive ceiling collapse that created a colossal space. Water flows along the bottom of the cave, and the water level may rise after rainfall. The cave structure is complex and multi-layered, showcasing the incredible power of geological processes. While access is limited to specific areas to protect the landscape, the texture of the limestone and the terrain shaped by groundwater offer profound geological value. Please note that entry into the deeper sections is strictly prohibited to preserve the scenery.
Since the temperature inside remains around 11°C regardless of the season, Kawachi Funaike is a great destination year-round. In summer, it feels much cooler than the outside air, while in winter, it feels relatively warmer. However, the humidity is very high (over 90%). Visiting during daylight hours allows you to experience the subtle changes in light near the cave entrance and the striking contrast with the outside environment. It is recommended to check local information before visiting, as water levels may change depending on recent weather or rainfall.
Visitors can enjoy a unique spatial experience walking through a massive void created by nature. In the tourist section, you can observe the geological formations and the way groundwater has carved the limestone over millions of years. While the area is equipped with maintained paths, please note that this is a guided sightseeing route rather than a professional caving (spelunking) site. It is a place to observe and appreciate the natural wonders from a safe, structured environment.
The area around Taga Town is known as the "Omi Karst" region of Shiga. It is characterized by limestone landscapes and is dotted with various hiking trails and other limestone caves. The surrounding mountains offer beautiful views typical of karst topography, making it an ideal area for nature lovers to combine cave exploration with hiking and landscape observation.
Because the temperature is consistently around 11°C and humidity is high, we strongly recommend bringing a light jacket or sweater even in summer. The ground can be damp or uneven, so wearing comfortable walking shoes or trekking shoes is highly recommended.
