Katsunuma Budou no Oka is a multi-purpose tourism facility located in Katsunuma, Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, centered around the themes of wine and nature. The facility is characterized by its wide-open views of the Southern Alps and the Kofu Basin, allowing visitors to enjoy different landscapes depending on the season. The highlight is the massive wine cave, one of the largest in Japan, housing approximately 150 varieties of wine. It is a versatile spot where you can experience the multifaceted culture of wine through tastings, relaxing in hot springs, staying overnight, dining at restaurants, or enjoying outdoor barbecues.
This region boasts a rich winemaking history spanning approximately 150 years. Katsunuma Budou no Oka has developed as a central hub to support and promote this local wine culture. The facility's history began in 1975 as the 'Katsunuma Town Public Enterprise Budou no Oka Center.' Since then, it has evolved through several stages of expansion, including the completion of lodging facilities, the development of the wine cave, and the introduction of hot spring facilities, transforming into the diverse tourism destination it is today.
The greatest attraction is the underground wine cave. With a vast number of wine bottles in storage, it provides an ideal environment to deepen your understanding of wine aromas and flavors. Additionally, the observation deck offers stunning scenery that changes with the seasons: cherry blossoms and peach blossoms in spring, vast vineyards from summer to autumn, and vibrant autumn foliage in late fall. For relaxation, the 'Tenku no Yu' hot spring facility allows you to unwind while gazing at the beautiful landscape.
From spring to summer, it is ideal to enjoy wine alongside lush green landscapes. During the autumn harvest season, the rich aroma of wine becomes even more intense, attracting many visitors. In winter, you can enjoy clear skies and beautiful starry nights. We recommend a style of visiting where you enjoy wine tastings and stroll through the facility during the day, and spend a relaxing evening at the hot spring or your accommodation. The facility is open daily from 8:30 to 20:00, making evening visits and overnight stays possible.
A variety of experiences are available on-site. Through wine tasting in the wine cave, you can touch the essence of Japan's representative wine culture. You can also enjoy meals in the outdoor BBQ garden amidst nature. For those staying overnight, some rooms feature private hot spring baths, allowing for a truly exclusive experience. The facility also functions as an RV Park, making it possible to immerse yourself in the wine culture while enjoying a stay in a motorhome.
The Katsunuma area is dotted with numerous other wineries and tourist spots. Within walking distance (about 20 minutes) or a short taxi ride from Katsunuma Budou-kyo Station, you will find many wine shops and vineyards. The surrounding area also features historical buildings and scenic landscapes, making it a wonderful place for driving and exploring the rich nature and wine culture of Yamanashi Prefecture.
As the facility includes slopes and stairs, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to use the hot spring facilities, it is convenient to bring swimwear or a change of clothes. Regarding payment, both cash and credit cards (as well as various IC cards) are accepted. While English signage and information are available, checking details in advance is recommended for smoother service. We highly recommend making reservations in advance for accommodations or BBQ use.
