"Katabe no Hi Matsuri" is a traditional fire ritual held in Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture, known as one of the most unique and mysterious festivals (Kisai) in the Omi region. Boasting an 800-year history, this energetic event is passed down through generations of local youth. The highlight is the sight of massive torches burning intensely against the dark winter sky, accompanied by the powerful shouts of local men. This ritual, which uses the primal force of fire to pray for good health and protection, offers an overwhelming sense of heat and energy that captivates all onlookers.
This festival has been preserved since ancient times to pray for the prevention of disease and to ensure well-being. The ritual is driven by the local "Wakashu" (young men) aged 15 to 34. They follow strict traditional procedures to prepare the materials, strengthening community bonds through the process. The torches are crafted using traditional materials such as alder wood, bamboo, rope, and rapeseed stalks, with meticulous attention to detail even in the final assembly on the day of the festival. The climax of the festival occurs around 8:00 PM when the massive, snake-shaped torch arrives and the "Hoka" (lighting of the fire) begins. As the torch is ignited, the surrounding area is bathed in an intense orange glow, creating a scene of overwhelming power. A signature sight is the sight of young men dressed in traditional fundoshi (loincloths), dancing wildly around the fire while making rhythmic shouts of "Goyo!" and "Hyo-yo!" alongside the sounds of bells and drums. The combination of intense movement and flying sparks is the true essence of this festival.
The festival is typically held around January 11th. Since it takes place during a winter night, temperatures are extremely low. The schedule begins around 6:00 PM with a drum procession, followed by the arrival of the torch at the shrine around 8:00 PM, and the lighting of the fire around 8:30 PM. To experience the most intense moment, ensure you are near the venue between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM when the torch is ignited and the dancers perform their most energetic movements. The darkness of the night makes the brilliance of the flames even more striking.
