Katahara Onsen Ajisai no Sato is a charming hot spring resort located in Gamagori City, Aichi Prefecture, where visitors can truly feel the changing seasons. The highlight of the year is the 'Ajisai Festival' held throughout the month of June. During this period, approximately 50,000 hydrangeas bloom in full glory across the park, creating a breathtaking sea of colors that attracts visitors from far and wide. It is an ideal place to spend a relaxing time amidst lush natural scenery and soothing hot springs.
The region has a long history deeply connected to its hot spring culture. The development of the 'Hydrangea Village' landscape is part of a dedicated effort to preserve and celebrate the local culture of appreciating seasonal beauty. The annual 'Ajisai Festival' and the 'Japan Hydrangea Exhibition,' which showcases rare varieties, have become established cultural events that utilize the area's natural resources. Additionally, events such as photography contests are held, making the site a place where people can record and share the beautiful scenery through art.

The greatest attraction is undoubtedly the sight of 50,000 hydrangeas blooming across the landscape in June. This massive display of color is truly spectacular. Furthermore, during the festival period, the gardens are illuminated from sunset until 9:00 PM (until 9:30 PM on Saturdays). This allows visitors to experience a completely different atmosphere, seeing the hydrangeas glowing beautifully under the lights. The 'Japan Hydrangea Exhibition' is another must-see, featuring over 100 varieties of rare hydrangeas, offering a deep look into the botanical diversity of these flowers.
The best time to visit is from May to July, with June being the absolute peak when the hydrangeas are in full bloom for the festival. While enjoying the vibrant colors during the bright daylight hours is wonderful, the night illumination period offers a special, more tranquil experience as the flowers emerge from the darkness under the soft glow of lights.

There are various activities available depending on when you visit. You can deepen your knowledge of the flowers through hydrangea-related workshops or participate in photography contests to capture the stunning scenery. The park often hosts events using original photo frames, making it a perfect destination for photography enthusiasts. Combining these seasonal events with a soak in the hot springs provides a complete sensory experience of the season.
The area around Katahara Onsen is a beautiful fusion of nature and hot spring culture. As a lakeside resort area, it is surrounded by various hot spring facilities and tourist attractions. It is easily accessible from other major sightseeing spots in Gamagori and serves as an excellent destination for a scenic drive or a relaxing getaway in Aichi Prefecture.
Since some paths in the garden may be unpaved or have slight steps, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to enjoy the night illuminations, please bring a light jacket or consider the temperature change after sunset. For payments at local facilities, please have cash or a credit card ready. While English support may vary, please check local signs. To protect the plants, please follow all rules regarding photography and restricted areas (for example, access may be limited from July due to pruning work).
