Kasugayama Primeval Forest is a strictly protected natural area located directly behind Nara Park. Due to its historical status as the sacred mountain of Kasuga Taisha Shrine, logging has been prohibited here for over 1,000 years. This has allowed a magnificent primeval forest of massive Japanese cedar trees to thrive. As a part of the UNESCO World Heritage site, the landscape is meticulously preserved to maintain its ancient-world charm.
The forest has long been revered as a sacred space, serving as the mountain behind the Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Because of its status as a divine domain, the natural environment has remained virtually unchanged for centuries due to strict prohibitions on wood harvesting. This historical continuity makes the forest a vital site for both cultural heritage and biodiversity conservation.
The most striking feature is the view of the ancient Japanese cedar trees stretching toward the sky. By walking along the well-maintained forest paths, visitors can experience a unique, untouched natural space that feels worlds away from the nearby city.
