Kato Island is a beautiful island located within the Setonaikai National Park in Kudamatsu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is connected to the mainland by the Kato Bridge (a Rangka Truss bridge) completed in 1970. The island's coastline, spanning approximately 30km, is characterized by a diverse and striking landscape of numerous large and small rock formations. In 2019, the area was registered as a 'Minato Oasis Kudamatsu ☆ Kato Island,' establishing it as a hub for tourism and outdoor recreation. The island's pristine natural scenery also served as a filming location for the movie 'Nagi no Shima' (The Island of Calm).
The name of the island is said to originate from a legend involving the deity of Itsukushima, who supposedly placed a 'kasa' (hat/umbrella) upon the island. Historically, the Kato Cruise Ship operated regular services from 1919 to 1977. Today, the island is easily accessible by land via the Kato Bridge, with well-maintained roads like Prefectural Route 173 and 174 serving the area. The local culture remains vibrant through community-led events, such as the 'Kato Fire Festival' organized by the local Kato Island Shrine Association.
There are several spots perfect for enjoying the artistry of nature. One of the most famous is 'Yuhizaki Cape' (Sunset Cape). It is considered one of Japan's premier spots for viewing sunsets; during winter, the view of the sun setting over the crimson-colored water through the 'Hanaguri Rock' is particularly spectacular. Another highlight is the 'Seaside Promenade,' a 300-meter path located south of Hanaguri Beach that gives you the sensation of walking directly above the sea. For seasonal beauty, the 'Kawazu Cherry Blossoms' are a must-see. From late February to early March, approximately 500 cherry trees bloom around the Shiokaze Garden, creating a stunning landscape alongside yellow rapeseed flowers.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. From February to March, the simultaneous blooming of Kawazu cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers provides a colorful spectacle. In February, the 'Kudamatsu Kato Island Trail' is organized for hikers traveling from Honoura to Fuaura. In May, the 'Kato Island Festival' brings out the beautiful azaleas, and in November, the traditional 'Kato Fire Festival' is held at the Shirahama parking area. For the best experience, visit the areas near Yuhizaki Cape during the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset.
The island offers various recreational opportunities. At Hanaguri Beach, visitors can participate in 'Sunset Yoga' sessions (advance reservation required). These sessions are held during the time leading up to sunset, with times varying by season. For a more immersive stay, the 'Kato Island Family Travel Village' offers camping, BBQ facilities, and hot spring access. The island is also excellent for cycling, with a route of about 30km allowing you to explore the coastal scenery at your own pace.
The surrounding Kudamatsu coastline offers much to see. The island features local spots like the 'Petit Sea Station,' where local seafood and vegetables are sold about twice a month. The natural landscape of the Shiokaze Garden is a vital part of the island's charm, offering a peaceful environment for relaxation.
When hiking or walking around the island, please wear comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing. If you plan to join a Sunset Yoga session, bring a towel, water, and a yoga mat or a thick towel to sit on. It is highly recommended to book yoga sessions at least 3 days in advance. While there is free parking available for general visitors, large bus users should use the designated parking along the prefectural road. Please note that many local services and small shops primarily accept cash.
