The Kashihara Rice Terraces have been maintained through the wisdom and hard work of local farmers who adapted to this challenging, steep terrain over many generations. It is officially designated as a Significant Cultural Landscape by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, showcasing the historical value of how humans and nature have coexisted. The most striking feature is the multi-layered structure of the rice paddies, which changes dramatically with the seasons. In spring, the water-filled paddies act as mirrors reflecting the sky; in summer, vibrant green rice stalks sway in the breeze; and in autumn, the fields turn into a sea of golden grain. The harmony between the terraces and the surrounding mountains is a major draw. The three-dimensional landscape created by the undulating terrain makes it a highly popular spot for photography.
You can enjoy vastly different views depending on when you visit. Spring (around April to May) is a highlight, as the water-filled paddies create a stunning 'water mirror' effect. Summer brings a lush, energetic green landscape, while autumn features the golden hues of ripening rice. For the best experience, visit during the morning when the soft light enhances the textures, or during the evening when the gentle light emphasizes the dramatic topography of the terraces.
The Kashihara Rice Terraces are primarily a destination for scenic appreciation and photography. The area is also gaining attention for agritourism, allowing visitors to connect with the essence of Japanese agriculture and nature. While walking through the natural environment, you can feel the peaceful atmosphere of a traditional Japanese village. Please note that hands-on farming experiences depend on the season and local availability, so it is recommended to check local tourism information in advance.
Kamikatsu Town offers many other attractions, such as the famous 'Leaf Business' (Irori) and various nature-based facilities. The nearby area around Mount Tsurugi is also excellent for hiking and nature observation. After visiting the terraces, we recommend a scenic drive or a stroll through the surrounding mountain villages to fully enjoy the local atmosphere.
As the area consists of natural, sloping terrain, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable, sturdy footwear. Because paths can be slippery, sneakers or trekking shoes are highly recommended. Since this is an outdoor site, please prepare for changing weather with seasonal clothing or sun protection.
