Mt. Kasayama is a small volcano with an elevation of 112m, located on the northeastern coast of Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Its name comes from its shape, which resembles a '笠' (kasa), a traditional Japanese hat worn by women. Situated in the center of the Kitachimonato Kaigan Quasi-National Park, it is a scoria cone featuring a small crater 30m in diameter and 30m deep. It is a place where geological beauty meets natural wonder, featuring the Myojin Pond and a forest that changes its expression with every season.
The landscape was formed by a lava plateau from a eruption approximately 11,400 years ago, followed by subsequent eruptions that created the scoria cone. Historically, the mountain gained academic and tourist attention after the Crown Prince (later Emperor Showa) visited in 1926. The hiking paths were later developed in 1927 by mining scholar Toyonoshin Tono, and the area was eventually donated to Hagi City by his son, Shoichi Tono. A monument dedicated to the Tono father and son stands near the summit to commemorate this history.

The best time to visit is during the 'Hagi Camellia Festival' from mid-February to late March. During this period, the vibrant red camellia flowers create a stunning landscape, including the beautiful 'ochitsubaki' (fallen flowers) covering the ground. The view from the summit is most spectacular on clear, sunny days when the islands of the Sea of Japan are clearly visible.
You can enjoy trekking along the 'Mt. Kasayama Nature Research Path.' The route from Myojin Pond through the camellia forest to the summit allows you to observe geological changes and plant diversity. At the summit, you can relax at the cafe while enjoying the view. It is an excellent spot for learning about the wonders of a Geopark.
The area surrounding Mt. Kasayama is rich in culture and nature. Near Myojin Pond and the historic areas of Hagi, you can encounter local ingredients and traditional crafts. The scenic coastline is also perfect for driving and coastal walks.
