Kasama Azalea Park is a beautiful destination located in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, situated at an elevation of 143 meters. Within its approximately 7-hectare grounds, about 8,500 azalea plants of various species—including Kirishima, Kurume, Yama-tsutsuji, and Oshiba—are meticulously cultivated. The most striking feature is the sight of the entire mountain being dyed in shades of red and pink during the Golden Week period. At the summit, a dedicated observation terrace allows visitors to enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding Kasama cityscape and the scenery along National Route 50.
This region is well-known for its rich tradition in the cultivation and appreciation of azaleas. The specific varieties planted here, such as the Kirishima and Kurume, are essential elements of the local natural landscape. The seasonal transformation of colors, where the entire mountain becomes a unified canvas of color, is a testament to the region's unique natural environment and long-standing horticultural heritage.
The greatest attraction of the park is the massive, continuous bloom of azaleas covering the mountainside. The varying colors and shapes of the different species create a dynamic, multi-layered landscape. This is especially spectacular around Golden Week, when the mountain is enveloped in vibrant hues. Additionally, the summit observation terrace provides a perfect vantage point to look out over the town of Kasama through a frame of blooming flowers. The walking paths are designed to lead you through these stunning floral displays.
The peak season for azaleas is primarily from April to May, with the most spectacular displays occurring around Golden Week. During this time, the mountain is most vividly colored. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the brilliant colors of the flowers and the clarity of the view from the summit. While the park grounds are generally open 24 hours, please note that the paid areas during the Azalea Festival operate from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The park features a natural, undulating terrain with well-maintained paths that weave through the azalea groves. The summit terrace is an ideal spot to rest and enjoy the panoramic scenery. During the seasonal "Kasama Azalea Festival," the main activity is a leisurely stroll to witness the changing colors and textures of the blossoms.
The park is surrounded by the charming atmosphere of Kasama. Along National Route 50, you will find various facilities and local businesses. Furthermore, the Kasama area is famous for its traditional ceramics (Kasama-yaki), making this a wonderful region where natural beauty and traditional Japanese craftsmanship coexist.
During the Azalea Festival, admission fees for the special areas are typically collected in cash. Please check local signage upon arrival as policies may vary.

No prior reservation is required to enter the park. However, for the special-access areas during the festival, please follow the local instructions provided on-site.
As the park is located on a 143m elevation with sloped paths, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. If you plan to spend time at the summit terrace, bringing a hat for sun protection and water for hydration is a good idea.
Photography is permitted throughout the park. Please be mindful of other visitors and follow local etiquette when taking photos, especially in crowded areas.
Wheelchair-accessible parking spaces are available. While some areas may have supports like canes/handrails, please be aware that the park terrain is sloped and requires careful movement.
