The Karuizawa New Art Museum is a registered museum that opened in 2012. It is characterized by a modern architectural design by Rikuio Nishimoto, featuring a glass-walled structure with white columns inspired by Japanese larch trees. The museum hosts exhibitions with a unique perspective, primarily focusing on Japanese contemporary art. Beyond its exhibition functions, the facility offers a multi-faceted cultural experience through its museum shop, bookstore, cafe-restaurant, and a stunning chapel designed by the renowned architect Kengo Kuma.
Established in 2012, the museum was born as a modern structure that harmonizes with the natural beauty of Karuizawa. Since its opening, it has focused on the avant-garde art scene in Japan. The museum has deepened its connections with both domestic and international artists through collaborations, such as introducing avant-garde artists from the Gutai Art Association and working with Jean-Michel Othoniel.
