Karuizawa Lake Garden is a sprawling 13,300 m² natural garden centered around a serene lake. The garden is composed of 8 distinct areas, each offering its own unique botanical collection and landscape. With approximately 400 varieties of roses—centered around English Roses—and a diverse selection of perennials that change with the seasons, every visit offers new discoveries. It is a sanctuary where you can feel the breath of nature and enjoy a peaceful, meditative time.
This garden is designed as a 'Natural Garden' that harmonizes with the rich natural environment of Karuizawa. Rather than being a purely ornamental, manicured garden, it is characterized by plant arrangements that follow natural cycles and a layout that utilizes the local topography. Located at the foot of Mount Asama, the space is crafted to provide visitors with a profound sense of unity with nature, maintaining the high-altitude flora and breathtaking scenery typical of this region.
The garden features several unique areas to explore. The 'English Rose Garden,' where 160 varieties of roses bloom in splendor, and the 'Fragrance Rose Path,' one of Japan's largest rose paths, are essential stops for rose enthusiasts. In the 'Woodland' area, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Asama on clear days. Other highlights include the 'Lakeside Path,' where water-loving plants thrive, and the 'Water Lily Pond,' where colorful lilies create a harmonious scene of water and greenery.
The garden's expression changes beautifully with the seasons. From late April to mid-June, you can enjoy spring blooms like tulips and muscari. The 'Rose Season' from mid-June to mid-July is the most spectacular time, as the scent of roses fills the entire garden. In summer, enjoy lakeside flowers such as azaleas, while from September to early November, you can witness autumn roses and the changing colors of the foliage. By adjusting your visit time according to the plant growth cycles, you can experience a completely different side of the garden.
Visitors can wander through the vast grounds to observe seasonal plants and landscapes. During the rose season, a gentle walk enveloped in floral scents is highly recommended. Depending on the season, the garden also hosts special events such as harp performances or water-based activities like punting boat tours. It is a place to not only enjoy quiet nature but also to connect with the garden's unique culture through seasonal events.
The Karuizawa area is renowned as a premier natural resort destination. Surrounding the Lake Garden, you will find various high-end outlets for shopping, as well as sophisticated cafes and restaurants. After a relaxing stroll through the garden, it is easy to transition into a leisurely afternoon at a nearby cafe.
Because many paths are made of wood chips or crushed stone and include some stairs or slopes, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that accessibility for wheelchairs and strollers is limited; please check the garden map for accessible routes. Payments can be made at the on-site shop and cafe; having cash ready is recommended for smoother transactions. While photography is permitted, please be mindful not to touch or damage the plants.
