The Karuizawa Picture Book Forest Museum is a specialized museum dedicated to the theme of picture books, located within the 'Muse no Mori' museum park in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture. Opened in July 1990, the museum focuses on the 'History of Western Picture Books,' showcasing precious materials such as original illustrations and first editions by prominent modern and contemporary authors. The facility spans a vast 15,000㎡ area, featuring three distinct exhibition halls, a picture book library, a shop, and a cafe.
The museum was established with the mission to introduce the culture of Western-style picture books in Karuizawa, a town that naturally breathes Western influence. It presents the evolution of picture books from their origins in the West to the modern day through authentic materials. The architecture, designed by Ruiseikesshitsu, creates a seamless fusion of nature and culture.
The facility is divided into several exhibition areas tailored to different purposes. The First Exhibition Hall houses the Shinichi Yoshida Collection, while the Second Exhibition Hall hosts rotating special exhibitions. Visitors can also experience the 'Picturesque Garden,' where the essence of picture book storytelling meets the natural environment. Additionally, the site includes a library for book lovers and a shop specializing in wooden toys and picture books.
The museum operates amidst the changing scenery of the four seasons, with special exhibitions curated to match the time of year. The garden and forest offer different-looking landscapes depending on when you visit. Standard opening hours are 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM; however, please note that from December to January, hours change to 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. The museum is closed from mid-January through February.
Beyond viewing the exhibits, visitors can enjoy a relaxing break at the cafe 'Lue,' browse unique items at the shop, or enjoy reading at the library. The shop features a selection of wooden toys and picture books available for purchase. The serene environment is perfect for quiet contemplation of original artwork and literature amidst the lush greenery.
The museum is part of the 'Muse no Mori' area, which hosts several other attractions. Nearby spots include the 'Erz Toy Museum Karuizawa,' the scenic 'Kazetoshi Park,' and 'Karuizawa Taliesin.' You can easily plan a cultural and nature-filled route by visiting these sites together.
As the museum is located in a forested area, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
