Karatsu Castle is a historic fortress located in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. Originally constructed in 1607, the site is now beautifully maintained as Maizuru Park. The most striking feature is the view from the top floor of the castle keep, which offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the Genkai Sea and Matsuura Bay. At night, the castle is illuminated, presenting a completely different, magical atmosphere compared to the daytime.
The castle has a rich history dating back to the Edo period. Following the abolition of the han system in 1871, much of the original structure was dismantled, but the area was later developed and opened as Maizuru Park in 1877. The current castle keep is a reconstruction completed in 1966, built as a five-story, five-level mock keep. In more recent years, various elements such as the Higo moat and stone walls near the Karatsu City Hall, as well as the Taiko-do near the Ninomaru site, have been restored to recreate the castle's historical appearance. In 2017, it was officially selected as one of the "Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles."
The greatest highlight of Karatsu Castle is the observation deck of the castle keep. From here, visitors can enjoy the surrounding natural scenery with an unobstructed 360-degree view. Other fascinating elements include the well-preserved stone walls, the restored Higo moat, and the single-story turret (yagura), all of which allow you to feel the weight of history. Additionally, the nearby Karatsu Shrine, which served as a place of prayer for the Karatsu lords, provides further historical context to your visit.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring, the Wisteria (a natural monument) within Maizuru Park adds a touch of seasonal color. For a truly magical experience, visit after sunset to see the castle illuminated against the dark sky. Because the appearance of the sea and the bay changes depending on the time of day and the season, you can encounter a different side of the castle every time you visit.
Inside the castle keep, you can explore various exhibits detailing the structure and history of the fortress. You can also enjoy a leisurely walk around the castle grounds, exploring the restored turrets, stone walls, and the Taiko-do.
