The Botchan Karakuri Clock is a mechanical automaton clock located in Hojuen, situated directly in front of Dogo Onsen Station in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. It was created in 1994 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Dogo Onsen Honkan (Main Building). The clock's structure incorporates traditional Japanese architectural styles, featuring multi-layered designs with vermilion pillars, tiled roofs, and elegant gold decorations. Every hour on the hour, a musical performance takes place where characters emerge from the clock and move in a synchronized display. Adjacent to the clock is a footbath (ashiyu) using authentic Dogo Onsen spring water, making it a beloved spot for travelers to relax and enjoy the local atmosphere.
This clock was born as part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the Dogo Onsen Honkan. The central theme is the famous novel 'Botchan' by Natsume Soseki. Since the novel is set in the streets of Matsuyama, the characters and performances embedded in the clock capture the historical and literary essence of Dogo. The design itself, resembling a traditional shrine or temple, serves as a piece of local cultural heritage. Furthermore, the location, Hojuen, is a historic square that was developed from a reclaimed area once known as Hojo Pond.
The greatest attraction is the automata performance that unfolds every hour. Characters from the novel 'Botchan' move to the rhythm of music, welcoming visitors with a sense of nostalgia. The clock's design is incredibly intricate; watching the figures emerge from the multi-layered structure is a unique spectacle that blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern mechanical technology. Additionally, the nearby footbath allows you to feel the direct warmth of the Dogo Onsen spring water while gazing at the surrounding cityscape, offering a moment of pure relaxation.
The clock performances occur every hour from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. At night, the clock is beautifully illuminated, offering a completely different and magical atmosphere compared to the daytime. Occasionally, special events are held where actors perform short plays (ko-shibai). In these performances, actors dressed as the novel's characters, such as Natsume Soseki or Masaoka Shiki, perform live in front of the clock. Depending on the season, the surrounding streets also change their appearance, offering different charms depending on when you visit.

Hojuen, where the Botchan Karakuri Clock stands, is in the heart of Dogo's most famous sightseeing area. The historic Dogo Onsen Honkan is within walking distance, and the area is surrounded by many traditional inns (ryokan) and charming shopping streets. You can also find the Masaoka Shiki Museum nearby, making this an excellent area for those interested in Japanese literature and history.

While many shops in the surrounding area offer English support, the clock performance is primarily visual and musical, so it can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of language.
No prior reservation is required to watch the clock performance or use the footbath.
If you plan to use the footbath, we recommend bringing a small towel to dry your feet. Please dress appropriately for the season.
