Karakoro Kobo is a unique craft center located in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, housed within the former Bank of Japan Matsue Branch building. Designed by the renowned architect Uheji Nagano, the building features a Western classical architectural style and is carefully preserved as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The facility functions as a modern cultural hub, hosting various manufacturing and sales workshops, restaurants, cafes, and rental spaces, all while maintaining its original historical structure. The name "Karakoro" is derived from the sound of people wearing wooden clogs (geta) crossing the nearby Matsue Bridge, evoking a nostalgic and charming Japanese atmosphere.
The history of this building dates back to 1918, with the establishment of the first Bank of Japan Matsue Branch. Originally a two-story wooden structure, it was rebuilt in 1938 into the current reinforced concrete building designed by Uheji Nagano, an architect famous for his Western classical-style bank designs. After the Bank of Japan moved its operations in 1981, a local preservation movement led to the building's renewal as "Karakoro Kobo" in 2000. In 2016, its significant historical value was officially recognized when it was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
The entire building serves as a precious historical exhibit. A standout feature is the underground vault, which preserves the essence of its former banking function and is now open as an exhibition space. Here, you can see the massive original vault doors and experience the heavy, secure atmosphere of the past. Other architectural details, such as the original counters, lighting, second-floor corridors, and window lattices, are preserved throughout the building. Additionally, the garden terrace features the famous pink "Lucky Post," a cultural symbol where visitors can drop letters to seek good fortune and connections.
While Karakoro Kobo is enjoyable year-round, we highly recommend visiting the "Garden Terrace" on sunny days. You can relax in the open air while enjoying menus from local cafes and restaurants. The main building remains open until 21:00, and the food hall (Karakoro Food Hall) is open until 23:00, making it an excellent spot for dinner or a late-night stroll. Since exhibitions and events change seasonally, there is always something new to discover with every visit.
Visitors can engage deeply with Japanese traditional crafts through the various workshops located within the facility, where you can observe or learn traditional techniques. The third floor provides space for tea ceremonies and specialized classes. Furthermore, the underground gallery often hosts art exhibitions and concerts, offering a rich cultural experience through music and visual arts.
Karakoro Kobo is a very convenient base for sightseeing in Matsue. Major landmarks such as Matsue Castle, the Shimane Prefectural Government, and the Shimane Prefectural Hall are nearby. It is also an ideal starting point for exploring the castle town via the Matsue Horikawa Sightseeing Boat, as the boarding point (Karakoro Plaza) is close by. You can also enjoy a deep dive into Matsue's culture by walking through the nearby Kyo-ten shopping district.
