Kanoya Rose Garden, located within Kirishima Oka Park in Kanoya City, Kagoshima Prefecture, is one of Japan's largest rose gardens in terms of both area and scale. The vast 8-hectare property is home to approximately 25,000 rose bushes. By leveraging the warm climate of Kagoshima, the garden is characterized by its ability to reach full bloom earlier than many other locations in Japan, particularly during the spring season. The expansive garden, filled with the enchanting scent of roses, offers a truly immersive experience in a lush, natural environment.
The area is widely recognized as a "Rose Town," a title supported by local initiatives to promote community development through rose-themed culture. Kanoya Rose Garden provides a landscape that harmonizes perfectly with the local natural environment. The garden also serves as a center for spreading rose culture through seasonal events such as the "Kanoya Rose Festival." Furthermore, the cultivation of local varieties, such as the 'Princess Kanoya,' has made the garden a beloved symbol of the region's identity.

The garden features a diverse collection of roses, including wild roses, old roses, modern roses, and English roses, allowing visitors to observe many different varieties. A major highlight is the observatory, which offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding scenery while you enjoy the blooms. Additionally, as part of the Kirishima Oka Park complex, the area is equipped with facilities such as campsites, go-karts, and a traditional tea room, making it possible to enjoy a complete stay in the heart of nature.
The roses typically bloom twice a year: once in spring and once in autumn. The spring season, specifically around Golden Week in May, is the most highly anticipated time as the garden reaches full bloom ahead of the rest of the country. The autumn season also offers a beautiful display of different floral expressions. For the best experience, visiting during bright daylight hours allows you to vividly observe the brilliant colors and textures of the roses against the natural landscape.

Beyond simply admiring the flowers, visitors can engage in various activities that utilize the surrounding environment. As part of the Kirishima Oka Park, the site offers camping for an overnight stay, go-karting for more active fun, and even flying disc golf. There is also a tea room available, providing a peaceful way to spend a quiet moment surrounded by the natural beauty of the park.
The area surrounding the garden within Kirishima Oka Park is well-equipped with various tourist facilities. It is an ideal environment for families, featuring an observatory, picnic areas, multi-purpose fields, and children's playgrounds. With various accommodations and sightseeing spots nearby, the area serves as an excellent base for exploring Kanoya City and the wider Kagoshima region.
Because the grounds are quite vast, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. The terrain includes some slopes and uneven paths, so clothing that allows for easy movement is best. For payments, both cash and credit cards are accepted at the garden's shops and facilities. While most information is available via signage, please note that English-language support may be limited. When taking photographs, please follow the garden rules and ensure that the natural environment and plants are not disturbed.
