Kannon Falls is a magnificent scenic spot located in the middle reaches of the Takigawa River within the Nanayama area of Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. Boasting a height of 30 meters and a width of 10 meters, its intense and powerful water flow has earned it the nickname 'Otoko-daki' (Male Falls). As one of the 'Japan Top 100 Waterfalls,' the area is a sanctuary of biodiversity, where clear streams are home to fish like Yamame (trout), and various wild birds such as Kingfishers and White Wagtails can be observed frequently.
This area has long been cherished for its natural architectural beauty. The landscape is characterized by a beautiful valley formed by clear streams and deep, tranquil pools. The connection between humans and nature is deeply rooted here, exemplified by local traditions such as the 'International Stream Climbing in Nanayama' event held every August. The awe-inspiring views of the falls have attracted many visitors seeking to experience the raw power of nature throughout history.

The primary attraction of Kannon Falls is its overwhelming power. The sight of the water crashing down against the rock face, creating a white mist, is truly spectacular. Beyond the main falls, the area features several distinct pools with unique characteristics. These include 'Kigakure-no-Fuchi' (Hidden Tree Pool), where trees arch over the water; 'Seijaku-no-Fuchi' (Silence Pool), known for its deep blue waters; and 'Shirakinu-no-Taki' (White Silk Falls), where the water drapes over the rocks like silk. Each spot offers a different expression of the water's beauty.
Kannon Falls offers a changing face throughout the year, making it a wonderful destination in any season. The changing water volumes and the seasonal shifts in surrounding vegetation are particularly captivating. While August brings lively local events, please note that due to recent heavy rainfall, the walking path leading to the base of the falls is currently closed. We highly recommend checking the latest status before your visit. Visiting during bright daylight hours allows for the best observation of the water spray, lush greenery, and local birdlife.
Nature observation is the primary way to enjoy this site. Visitors can experience a sense of unity with nature by watching the movement of birds like Kingfishers or the movement of Yamame fish in the clear stream. The various pools around the falls offer a serene atmosphere for contemplating the sounds of nature. However, please be aware that due to the current closure of the lower walking paths, certain physical activities near the water's edge may be restricted. It is best to enjoy the view from the accessible vantage points.
The Nanayama area of Karatsu City, where Kannon Falls is located, is a region surrounded by abundant natural beauty. The valleys around the falls are composed of intricate geological formations and flowing waters, making it a renowned destination for those looking to enjoy scenic landscapes and peaceful retreats in Saga Prefecture.
