Kannabi no Sato is a scenic landscape centered around the Inabuchi Rice Terraces, located in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture. Selected as one of the 'Top 100 Selected Rice Terraces of Japan,' this area offers a breathtaking view of much more than just agriculture; it is a living tapestry of nature and human heritage. The terraced fields change their expression with every season, allowing visitors to experience the quintessential 'original landscape' of Japan.
This area is deeply etched with the history of the Asuka period. The rice terraces were not merely a scenic feature but the very foundation of local life, supporting rice cultivation, sericulture, and vegetable farming for centuries. This tradition of farming in harmony with the rugged terrain has been preserved through the ages, and in 2011, the area was designated as a National Important Cultural Landscape. The surrounding region is a place where nature and ancient history coexist, with various archaeological sites like the Kitora and Takamatsuzuka tombs scattered nearby.
The Inabuchi Rice Terraces offer a different spectacle depending on when you visit. In the summer, you will see a lush, vibrant expanse of green fields. As autumn approaches, the landscape transforms into a shimmering sea of golden rice stalks. A major highlight during the autumn season is the 'Kakashi Road,' where uniquely designed scarecrows are displayed along the paths, adding a touch of humor and local culture to the scenic view. These displays are a symbol of the changing seasons and the local community's spirit.
The most striking feature of this location is the seasonal transformation. From June to August, the landscape is filled with the energetic, deep greens of summer growth. From September to October, the scenery turns golden as the rice ripens, accompanied by the vivid colors of red spider lilies (Higanbana). Visiting during the autumn is particularly worthwhile to see the 'Scarecrow Contest' exhibits, which feature incredibly creative and characterful scarecrows.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through the natural landscape and observe the traditional Japanese rural scenery. Walking along the 'Kakashi Road' in autumn is a special experience that allows you to touch upon local culture in a playful way. The area is also perfect for a historical walk, as you can combine the observation of natural beauty with a journey through the ancient history of the Asuka region.
Asuka Village is home to many significant historical sites. Nearby, you can explore the Ishibutai Kofun and the famous Takamatsuzuka and Kitora Tombs, known for their ancient murals. There are also areas with traditional streetscapes and historical routes that allow for a deep, immersive historical exploration of Japan's ancient roots.
