Kanda House is a traditional folk museum located in the historic village of Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture. This facility is beloved by many visitors as a living testament to the traditional architectural styles and the profound wisdom of past generations. Inside the house, you can experience the authentic atmosphere of a traditional Japanese lifestyle through the display of an irori (sunken hearth) and various tools used in daily life.
The Kanda House is a quintessential Gassho-zukuri building that has been preserved over many years. It serves as a vital historical resource, illustrating how people managed to thrive and maintain a lifestyle within a harsh, mountainous environment. Visitors can learn how architectural styles and the usage of daily implements evolved and were protected over a span of 200 years.
The interior is organized into different levels, each offering unique insights. On the first floor, you will find a relaxing space with an irori, allowing you to feel the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese room. The second floor features a "fire-watching window" (himado), a structure designed to monitor the hearth. From the second to the fourth floor, the museum displays various folk tools used for sake brewing, forestry, sericulture (silk farming), and weaving, which once supported the local community. Additionally, the fourth floor serves as an attic-style observation space.
The scenery of Shirakawa-go changes beautifully with the seasons. In summer (July and August), the lush greenery provides a stunning backdrop for the Gassho-zukuri houses. The museum is open from 10:00 to 16:00, with the final admission at 15:50. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to clearly observe the intricate details of the architectural structure and the displayed artifacts.
