Kanazawa Zoo, located within Kanazawa Nature Park, is a specialized facility focused on the conservation and display of rare herbivores from around the world. The zoo is uniquely divided into four distinct zones based on habitat: the Americas, Eurasia, Oceania, and Africa. The park utilizes its hilly terrain to create a naturalistic landscape. A major highlight is the Shiinokiyama Observatory, which offers a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, including the sea, Yokohama Sea Paradise, Tokyo Bay, and even the Boso Peninsula in the distance.
Kanazawa Nature Park is a vast green space located in southern Yokohama, surrounded by the Enkaizan/Kitakamakura Greenery Conservation Area and several community forests. The zoo within the park is characterized by displays that harmonize with the natural environment, playing a vital role in preserving the local ecosystem. The park itself is recognized as one of the '50 Best Parks in Kanagawa,' highlighting its significant value as a natural resource for the region.
The park features four thematic areas mimicking the natural habitats of various animals: the Americas, Eurasia, Oceania, and Africa. Each zone allows visitors to observe animals native to those specific regions. For a more intimate experience, the 'Honobono Plaza' features domestic animals such as ponies, goats, and sheep, making it a favorite for families. Additionally, the 'Nonohana-kan' museum offers educational exhibits regarding local flora and fauna.
Because the park is situated on hilly terrain, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. You can enjoy seasonal blooms such as plum blossoms and narcissus in the 'Ukiuki Forest,' or wander through the diverse tree groves of 'Nandaro Slope.' We highly recommend visiting on clear, sunny days to fully appreciate the unobstructed views from the observatory overlooking Tokyo Bay and Kannonzaki.
The park is well-equipped for relaxation and exploration. Visitors can enjoy the rest houses, rest areas, and the 'Nonohana Cafe' and 'Nonohana Gift Shop' to soak in the atmosphere. For convenience, the 'Koala Bus' operates a shuttle service between the main gate and the parking lot at the front entrance. Families with children will appreciate the 'Kodomo Hiroba' (Children's Plaza), which features various athletic play equipment and slides.
Kanazawa Nature Park is seamlessly connected to several lush green spaces, including Kamariya Citizen's Forest, Kanazawa Citizen's Forest, and Torisawa Citizen's Forest. It also links to the Rokukoku Pass Hiking Course, which extends toward the Tenen area in Kamakura. This makes the park a central hub for hikers and nature enthusiasts looking to explore a vast network of natural trails and forest paths.
As the park is located on hilly terrain with various slopes and walking paths, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Regarding payments, while cash is accepted, electronic tickets, credit cards, and transportation IC cards can also be used for various facilities. English signage and information are available throughout the site. Please note that there are two parking areas (Front Entrance and Highway Side); we recommend checking availability if traveling by car.
