Lake Kanayama is a reservoir formed by the Kanayama Dam. The surrounding landscape is defined by a pristine natural environment, featuring dense forests of Yezo spruce and Todo fir. The area is well-equipped with various zones, including areas for overnight stays, campsites, and sports facilities. Depending on the season, the lake becomes a hub for different activities, such as tranquil canoeing in the warmer months or exhilarating ice fishing on the frozen surface during winter.
The development of this region has been driven by the 'Minamifurano Village Promotion and Development Plan' associated with the dam construction. In 1993, the area was designated as a 'Dam Open to the Community' by the Ministry of Construction (now the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism), which facilitated the opening of the dam and its surrounding areas to the public. This led to the creation of specialized zones designed for recreation, accommodation, and various sports, making the natural resources accessible to visitors.
Lake Kanayama is uniquely organized into several distinct areas based on their intended use. There is the 'Day Trip Stroll Area' featuring an observation deck with a view of the dam, the 'Waterfront Accommodation Area' with lodging and campsites, the 'Family Area' located near the water's edge, and the 'Sports Area' for activities like canoeing and park golf. Additionally, the 'Sun, Forest, and Lake Festival' (Kanayama Lake Festival) is held on the last Saturday and Sunday of July, featuring spectacular fireworks displays.
Activities change significantly with the seasons. During the summer (June to September), the focus is on water-based activities such as canoeing, rafting, and camping. In contrast, during the winter, the lake surface freezes completely, creating a perfect environment for ice fishing for wakasagi (Japanese smelt). The views from the high-altitude observation decks also change beautifully with each season.
The lakeside is a popular spot for water sports like canoeing and rafting, often hosting various competitions and training sessions. The area also features well-maintained sports zones for activities like park golf, allowing visitors to stay active amidst nature. For those looking to stay longer, the camping areas provide a wonderful opportunity to spend nights by the lake.
Lake Kanayama is conveniently located near other major Hokkaido tourist destinations such as Furano and Biei, as well as the famous Hoshino Resorts Tomamu. Nearby hot spring areas like Yunozawa Onsen also make it easy to combine a nature-filled itinerary with relaxing hot spring experiences.
