Cape Kamui is a stunning natural landmark situated at the very tip of the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido. A walking path approximately 770 meters long leads from the traditional 'Nyonin Kinzei' (prohibited to women) gate toward the tip of the cape. This path, known as 'Charenka no Komichi,' is a unique topographical feature where the Sea of Japan unfolds on both sides of the hiker. At the end of the path stands a lighthouse, offering an unparalleled 300-degree panoramic view of the endless blue horizon.
This area holds a unique historical significance due to the existence of the 'Nyonin Kinzei' gate, a tradition where women were historically restricted from entering certain areas. This reflects the deep-seated respect and awe for the powerful natural forces present in this region. Today, the area is strictly managed to balance nature conservation with tourism. Access and gate opening times are strictly regulated based on the season and weather conditions to preserve the delicate environment of Shakotan.
The greatest highlight of Cape Kamui is the breathtaking view of the Sea of Japan while walking the 'Charenka no Komichi' trail. The landscape is characterized by dramatic cliffs and a vast, unobstructed horizon. In early summer, the area becomes particularly beautiful as the Ezo Kanzou (daylilies) bloom, adding a touch of color to the rugged scenery. The view from the lighthouse at the tip of the cape provides a sense of immense scale and tranquility.
The scenery changes dramatically depending on the season. Early summer is a peak time to visit to see the seasonal flora like the Ezo Kanzou. Please note that operating hours vary by month; during the winter season (December to March), the hours are shortened (typically 10:00 to 15:00). It is also crucial to check the weather before your visit, as the gates may be closed due to heavy wind or rain for safety.
The primary activity is hiking toward the tip of the cape. The round trip from the entrance gate to the lighthouse takes approximately 40 minutes. While the path is a well-maintained trail, it is a natural environment, so the focus is on a scenic walk through nature. It is a perfect way to experience the rugged coastline and the seasonal changes of the Shakotan region.
The area around Cape Kamui is rich in natural beauty, with various scenic spots along the Shakotan coastline. The Shakotan town area is also famous for its seasonal delicacies, particularly sea urchin (Uni), making it possible to combine a scenic hike with a wonderful culinary experience.
Since you will be walking on a natural trail, we recommend comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for movement. Because weather conditions can change rapidly near the coast, bringing windproof and waterproof outerwear is highly recommended. While some signage is available, please be aware that detailed instructions may require local confirmation. Payments at nearby facilities generally accept cash, credit cards, or transit IC cards. Always check the weather forecast beforehand, as the gate may close due to high winds.
