Located in Takamori Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kamishimi Kumano Koma Shrine is a highly mystical shrine nestled within a deep, lush forest. The most striking feature is the countless stone lanterns that line the approach. The scenery, created by the harmony of verdant trees, moss-covered stones, and layers of lanterns, gives visitors the sensation of stepping into a world from an anime or a fantasy film. It is a rare spot where you can truly feel the breath of nature in complete silence.
This shrine is deeply connected to the ancient Kumano faith. It reflects the traditional Japanese spiritual culture of finding divinity within the natural world, characterized by a design that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding environment. The number and arrangement of the lanterns represent a history of prayer and devotion, serving not just as a tourist destination but as a spiritual sanctuary. The current mystical landscape has been shaped over many years alongside the rich natural environment of the Aso region.
The primary highlight is undoubtedly the path lined with stone lanterns. The shrine reveals different faces depending on the season. In spring and summer, the vibrant greenery is exceptionally beautiful, while in autumn, the surrounding foliage turns colorful, adding deeper layers of color to the landscape. We recommend visiting during the morning when soft light filters through the trees, or during the late afternoon when shadows deepen, as this beautifully highlights the textures of the stone lanterns. However, since it is located in a forest, visiting during daylight hours is generally most practical.
The main activity here is a meditative stroll through nature. Because the path includes stairs and slopes, you should walk carefully, feeling each step. Photography is a very popular activity, as many visitors bring cameras to capture the stunning scenery and the intricate details of the lanterns. It is a place where you can truly face yourself in the midst of silence.
The area around Takimori offers beautiful views of the Aso caldera. There are also various sightseeing spots utilizing the famous spring water of Aso, as well as several hot spring (onsen) facilities nearby. It is an excellent part of a driving route to fully experience the rich natural beauty of Kumamoto.
As the approach contains stone steps and slopes, please wear comfortable walking shoes, such as sneakers. For purchasing amulets (omamori) or stamps (goshuin), cash is required. English-language signage and staff support are limited, so it is helpful to be aware of basic shrine etiquette beforehand. As this is a sacred site, please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor. While photography is generally permitted, please be considerate of other visitors and the sanctity of the site.
