Kamishichiken, located in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto, is the oldest Hanamachi (entertainment district) in the city. Along the eastern approach to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, you will find a continuous line of traditional ochaya (teahouses) built in classic architectural styles, creating a streetscape that feels frozen in time. The history of Kamishichiken is said to stem from seven teahouses built using materials from the reconstruction of Kitano Tenmangu. A famous legend involves Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who reportedly praised the 'Mitarai Dango' (sweet dumplings) offered by the teahouses during a grand tea ceremony in Kitano; this legacy is reflected in the 'Itsutsu Dango' (five-ball dumpling) crest still used today. Despite the industrial shifts in the Nishijin textile area after the war, the district has successfully preserved its traditional culture. In 2010, the Kaburenjo (dance hall), which retains Meiji-era architectural styles, underwent a major renovation to ensure the continued preservation of this historic landscape.
The greatest charm of Kamishichiken lies in its historical streetscape and the traditional events held within it. The Kamishichiken Kaburenjo is particularly famous for hosting high-level dance performances like the spring 'Kitano Odori' and the autumn 'Kotobuki-kai.' During the summer, the area transforms with 'Beer Gardens' held at the Kaburenjo and surrounding facilities, creating a festive and vibrant atmosphere.
