Kaminoshima Church is a Catholic place of worship located in Kaminoshima-cho, Nagasaki City. Completed in 1897, this single-story brick building features a striking white exterior, making it a prominent landmark visible from the entrance of Nagasaki Port. The Kaminoshima area has a profound history of 'Hidden Christians' (Kakure Kirishitan) dating back to the early Edo period. During the late Edo period, Christians from the Sotome area moved here alongside those involved in coastal defense construction. In 1876, a temporary chapel was established, marking a period where many hidden believers officially returned to the Catholic faith. The current structure was designed and built using the personal funds of Father Durand, who arrived in the area in 1892, and was completed in 1897. The church remains a deeply rooted symbol of faith that survived the strict religious suppressions of the past.
The most striking feature is the beautiful exterior and architectural structure. Originally a brick building with a plaster finish, it was later renovated with lime and cement to achieve its current brilliant white appearance.
