Kaminari Taki is a magnificent waterfall located in Takayama Village, Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture. It is celebrated as one of the three great waterfalls of Takayama Village and was officially designated as a scenic spot in 2003. The waterfall drops 30 meters with a width of 5 meters, flowing over a cliff of tuff breccia formed by the erosion of the Matsukawa River. Its most distinctive feature is the hollowed-out, roof-like shape of the rock wall behind the falls, which allows visitors to stand behind the cascading water and view the scenery from the back. This unique characteristic has earned it the nickname 'Uramimi no Taki' (the waterfall seen from behind).
There are several theories regarding the origin of the name 'Kaminari Taki' (Thunder Falls). One legend suggests the name comes from the way the water splashes like lightning strikes, while another suggests it refers to the thunderous, roaring sound produced by the heavy flow. For generations, it has been cherished as a vital part of the local natural landscape.
The greatest attraction is the structure that allows you to enter the space behind the waterfall. It is a rare experience to be able to observe the falling water and the expansive view simultaneously from such a unique perspective. The sight of the constant water spray against the steep, rugged cliffs is a mesmerizing element that draws visitors from near and far.
The surrounding scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. From spring to summer, the area is enveloped in lush greenery. In autumn, the landscape is beautifully colored with vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red. Please note that the area is closed during the winter season (from late November to early May), so it is essential to check the schedule before visiting. Visiting during daylight hours ensures the best visibility of the water's movement and the vibrant colors of the surrounding flora.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks through the surrounding natural environment. The experience of standing behind the waterfall to watch the water flow is truly one-of-a-kind. Additionally, the area offers proximity to hot spring facilities and auto-campgrounds, making it an ideal spot for an extended stay in nature. You can also explore the area using e-bikes, which are available in the vicinity.
Near Kaminari Taki, you can find the Matsukawa Asaya Taki-no-yu hot spring facility. The 'Shiawase no Mori Taki-no-yu' auto-campground is also adjacent, providing a perfect base for outdoor enthusiasts. Furthermore, other scenic spots like the 'Yataki' falls, which showcase the natural beauty of Takayama Village, are located nearby.
As the terrain can be slippery, please wear sturdy, non-slip walking shoes. Since you may get splashed if you walk behind the waterfall, bringing waterproof clothing or a raincoat is highly recommended. While the waterfall area itself is a free public space, nearby facilities may require cash or credit cards. Please note that English-language signage is limited, so it is helpful to check maps in advance. To preserve the natural environment, please follow local etiquette and take all trash back with you.
