The Kami-San'ike Aquatic Plant Garden is a serene botanical destination located in the Kami-San'ike district of Nikko, Tochigiken, spanning approximately 22,000 square meters. The garden is home to about 30,000 plants representing roughly 300 different species, meticulously arranged to showcase various ecological environments. Visitors can explore diverse zones tailored to specific plant needs, including aquatic plants, alpine flora, and plants that thrive in dry environments, offering a profound look into natural ecosystems. A truly unique feature of this garden is the presence of historic stone Buddha statues scattered throughout the grounds, which adds a layer of spiritual and cultural depth to the natural beauty of the landscape.
This area has long been a place where nature and human life coexist in harmony. The garden preserves more than just botanical life; it serves as a living museum of local culture. For instance, the 'Keyaki no Usu' (Zelkova Mortar), a relic representing the traditional lifestyle of the Kami-San'ike community, can be found here. By integrating local historical artifacts and stone deities with botanical displays, the garden offers a space where the history of the region and the natural environment are seamlessly woven together.

The garden is open from April 15th to November 30th, with much to see throughout the seasons:
Daylight hours are the best time for detailed observation of plant shapes and colors. Please note that the final entry is at 4:00 PM, so plan your visit accordingly.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while learning about plant ecology. Walking through the various zones—from the water-side paths to the recreated alpine environments—provides an educational experience. Additionally, the garden offers a cultural journey, as you can observe the historic stone Buddha statues and local heritage items like the 'Keyaki no Usu' alongside the natural scenery. The Kami-San'ike district is a lush, natural part of Nikko. The surrounding area is filled with scenic landscapes and natural beauty. Since it is easily accessible from other major sightseeing spots in Nikko, many visitors combine a trip to the botanical garden with a visit to nearby hot spring (onsen) resorts or local cultural sites.
Because the garden features diverse terrain—including rocky paths and areas near water—we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. It is also wise to carry rain gear or a parasol to prepare for sudden weather changes. To protect the natural environment and historical artifacts, please refrain from picking plants or touching the stone Buddha statues. For accessibility, free wheelchairs are available for loan.
