Kamikochi is a stunning mountain highland located at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters in the Northern Alps (Hida Mountains) of Nagano Prefecture. The scenery, created by the pure flow of the Azusa River and the grand presence of the Hotaraken Mountains, is so beautiful it is often described as a place where gods descend. As one of Japan's most famous mountain resorts, it attracts visitors from all over the world for hiking, photography, camping, and nature observation. It is a special sanctuary where you can escape the bustle of the city to feel the crisp air and the overwhelming scale of nature.
The name Kamikochi is rooted in ancient legends suggesting it is a place where deities descend. Historically, the region has placed a heavy emphasis on balancing nature conservation with tourism. Strict regulations, such as private car restrictions, are in place to protect the environment, ensuring that the untouched wilderness remains preserved. This commitment to preserving the landscape for future generations is deeply rooted in the local culture.
There are numerous spots in Kamikochi that never fail to enchant visitors. The most iconic is 'Kappa Bridge' (Kappa-bashi). From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Azusa River set against the magnificent Hotaka Mountain Range. Another essential spot is 'Myojin Pond,' which offers a mystical atmosphere with the surrounding mountains reflected in its mirror-like surface. Furthermore, the walking paths along the Azusa River are relatively flat and easy to navigate, allowing even beginners to enjoy a relaxing stroll while admiring the beautiful mountain stream. The scenery changes with every season, ensuring a new discovery every time you visit.
Kamikochi reveals a completely different face depending on the season. In spring (May–June), the fresh greenery is beautiful, and the melting snow creates energetic river flows. Summer (July–August) is the ideal season for hiking and camping in a refreshing, cool climate. Autumn (September–October) is when the mountains are dyed in vibrant colors, offering the most colorful scenery of the year. Additionally, visiting in the early morning allows you to witness ethereal landscapes filled with mist and the sight of the Hotaka peaks illuminated by the sunrise—we highly recommend staying overnight to experience this.
A wide variety of activities allow you to experience nature with your entire body. Walking along the well-maintained paths is enjoyable for everyone from beginners to experienced hikers. Camping under a starry sky offers a luxury that is hard to find in daily life. The area also serves as a base for serious mountaineering, providing access to various climbing routes in the surrounding peaks. Whether it is the sound of the wind, the sensation of the air, or the transparency of the water, you can experience a profound sense of unity with nature.
Kamikochi is surrounded by many charming destinations. Access to areas like Matsumoto City or Takayama via bus or taxi is excellent, providing easy connections to historical towns and hot spring-rich areas. The parking areas in Sawando or Hirayu serve as the gateways to Kamikochi, from which you can access the highland via public transportation. The surrounding area is well-equipped with various accommodations, enhancing its function as a complete mountain resort.
Because of the high altitude, you must be mindful of temperature changes regardless of the season. Temperatures can be 5 to 10 degrees Celsius lower than in-town areas like Matsumoto. Even in summer, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, so please bring a light jacket. For hiking, comfortable walking shoes and proper gear are essential. While many paths are well-maintained, please remember you are in a mountain environment. Please respect the rules to preserve the beautiful landscape and follow the principle of leaving no trace.
