Kamaike Pond is a serene lake located in Otari Village, Kitaazumi District, Nagano Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters. The landscape is shaped by the surrounding deciduous forests, which offer a completely different visage depending on the season. In the summer, the striking contrast between the deep blue sky and the shimmering lake surface is a highlight, while in autumn, the area is transformed by the brilliant reds and yellows of beech and maple trees. Due to its high altitude, the air remains refreshingly cool even during the hottest summer months, and the abundant shade from the surrounding trees provides a comfortable environment for visitors.
The area surrounding Kamaike Pond has long been celebrated for its rich natural environment. The surrounding beech forests play a vital role in supporting the local ecosystem, maintaining the biological diversity of the region. Visitors may also notice a small stone shrine (Mido) near the lakeside, a subtle reminder of the deep-rooted connection between the local community and the natural world. This area represents a history of coexistence between human culture and the preservation of a pristine natural landscape.

The most captivating element of Kamaike Pond is the perfect harmony between the water surface and the surrounding scenery. On clear days, the reflection of the sky and the lush greenery creates a mirror-like effect that is truly mesmerizing. A well-maintained walking path allows visitors to approach the water's edge easily. A notable feature is the small stone shrine nestled within the landscape, which adds a spiritual and aesthetic depth to the view. The walking trail around the lake is approximately 2km long and takes about 40 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace.
The scenery changes dramatically depending on when you visit. Mid-to-late October is the peak season for autumn colors, when the beech and maple trees turn vibrant shades of red and gold, making it one of the most popular times for photography. During the summer (June to September), the vivid contrast between the blue sky and the greenery makes it an ideal destination for a cool mountain retreat. Because temperatures can drop significantly depending on the time of day and weather, it is highly recommended to bring appropriate layers.

Activities at Kamaike Pond center around nature immersion, such as walking and photography. The walking paths are designed for forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) and nature observation. Please note that while the paths are maintained, some sections may be unpaved, consist of wooden planks, or feature slight inclines. This makes it a wonderful place for photographers looking to capture the stillness of the lake and the textures of the forest.
As you travel toward Kamaike Pond, you can experience the local food culture of Nagano. For instance, the restaurant "Soba-ya Hotaru" located on the way offers delicious handmade buckwheat noodles (soba) and seasonal mountain vegetable tempura. The area is also near historical routes related to the "Salt Road" (Shio-no-Michi), perfect for those interested in hiking and history.
