Kamihachi no Shidarezakura (also known as Hatchi no Higanzakura) is a historic cherry tree located in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, with an estimated age of approximately 500 years. The tree reaches a height of about 15 meters and is famous for its incredibly wide, sprawling branches that extend 17 meters east-to-west and 22 meters north-to-south. This massive, unique silhouette makes it an iconic landmark of the local landscape.
This cherry tree is affectionately called the 'Hatchi no Naesai Sakura' because it blooms during the traditional period when rice seedlings (naesai) are prepared. It serves as a symbol of the local agricultural culture and its historical significance has led to its designation as a natural monument of Gunma Prefecture. For centuries, the tree has been carefully preserved and protected by the local community.
The most striking feature is the overwhelming breadth of its branches. The sight of the branches spreading out across 17 meters east-to-west and 22 meters north-to-south, as if looking out over the surrounding area from the high ground, is a view unique to this location.
