Kaminoiko Pond is a breathtakingly clear pond located within a forest in Kesshiro, Hokkaido. Although it is a relatively small pond—approximately 220 meters in circumference and about 5 meters deep—its water quality is exceptionally pure, offering visibility so high that the bottom is perfectly clear. The water color shifts beautifully from a vibrant turquoise blue to a deep emerald green, creating a deeply mystical atmosphere. The sight of large fallen trees resting on the bottom, amidst a play of light and shadow, creates an otherworldly landscape.
The pond is named 'Kaminoiko' (Pond of the Gods) due to the legend that its waters originate from the underground springs of Lake Mashu. While Lake Mashu is a rare type of lake with no visible rivers flowing in or out, the surrounding area is rich with such spring water, which feeds Kaminoiko. The water temperature remains low at approximately 8°C throughout the year. This low temperature slows the decomposition of organic matter, allowing the fallen trees to remain preserved in their original form on the bottom for a long time. In 2017, the area was officially incorporated into the Akan Mashu National Park.
The greatest draw is the incredible color and transparency. When sunlight hits the surface, the white volcanic ash at the bottom reflects the light, creating a brilliant blue glow. The fallen trees create a sense of frozen time and profound silence. Additionally, near the pond, you might witness the dynamic sight of cherry salmon jumping up 'Sakura Falls' between June and August.
Kaminoiko Pond shows different faces depending on the season. The clarity is most striking during the daytime when sunlight is strongest. To see the fine details of the underwater landscape, a sunny day at midday is ideal. The surrounding lush greenery makes the summer scenery particularly beautiful. However, during winter, the area is heavily affected by snow; it is essential to check the latest road conditions before visiting.
Simply observing the scenery in the silence of nature is a precious experience here. Depending on the season, guided tours such as 'Kaminoiko Snowshoe Tours' may be available, offering a unique way to experience the winter landscape. You may also observe the rich ecosystem, such as the Oshorokoma (a type of fish) swimming through the clear waters.

As the pond is located within a forest, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please note that the access road to the parking area may be unpaved, so drive with caution. Even in summer, temperatures near the water can feel cool, so bringing layers is a good idea. To protect this precious environment, please ensure you take all trash home and strictly follow any posted restrictions regarding entering the water or restricted zones.
