Kamezuka Kofun Park, located in Sato, Oita City, is a historical park featuring one of the largest keyhole-shaped burial mounds (zenpo-koen-fun) in the prefecture. This massive structure, measuring 116 meters in length and reaching up to 10 meters in height, is estimated to have been constructed in the early 5th century. The park is a well-maintained historical site that allows visitors to actually climb the mound to experience its immense scale. From the summit, an expansive and refreshing view stretches out toward the distant Beppu Bay.
This burial mound was constructed between the late 4th and early 5th centuries. The structure consists of a three-tiered design with the front section facing south, featuring a specialized indentation on the western side. Traces suggest the mound was once covered in white quartz-based stones, highlighting its immense historical value. In 1996, it was designated as a National Historic Site. The area reflects a culture deeply connected to the sea, serving as a vital monument to the regional history of ancient maritime peoples.
The greatest thrill is the ability to physically climb the mound. As you follow the path from the front to the rear section, you can observe the three-tiered structure and the remains of ancient cylindrical clay figures (haniwa). At the summit, the massive stone sarcophagus, measuring 3.2 meters in length, offers an overwhelming sense of presence. Additionally, the adjacent 'Amabe Kofun Museum' provides a multi-dimensional learning experience with precious funerary goods, large-scale dioramas recreating the construction process, ironware replicas, and reconstructed models of the burial mounds.
The autumn months, particularly October and November, are highly recommended. During this season, the 'Amabe Festival' is held to recreate ancient rituals. Visitors can experience programs such as fire-making, making haniwa clay figures, and crafting magatama (comma-shaped beads), making history feel much more tangible. During the daytime, the park offers beautiful, bright vistas of the coastline and Beppu Bay.
Learning about history is an interactive experience here. The Amabe Kofun Museum features a multimedia corner with videos and a mini-theater to help visitors understand the world of the Kofun period. During autumn events, workshops often allow for hands-on experiences of ancient lifestyles. Walking the mound itself is more than just sightseeing; it is a profound way to feel the ancient engineering and craftsmanship of the era.
