Kamejo Park is located in central Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture. It was developed by refining the Honmaru and Ninomaru (inner and secondary baileys) areas of the former Tsuchiura Castle. The name "Kamejo" (Turtle Castle) originates from the historical fact that the castle was surrounded by moats, giving it a shape reminiscent of a turtle. As a designated historical site of Ibaraki Prefecture (No. 1), the park offers a unique space where castle architecture and natural beauty coexist. Visitors can witness the grandeur of history through the preserved Yagura-mon gate and the East and West Turrets, which serve as vital cultural landmarks.
The site holds significant historical value as the former location of Tsuchiura Castle. During the Meiji era, the area was developed into a public park following a donation from a Viscount of the former Tsuchiura Clan. This transition helped preserve the local culture and natural landscape while making it accessible to the public. Today, the park serves a dual purpose: it is both a protected historical site and a peaceful recreational space for local citizens and travelers alike.
The park is dotted with various remnants of the Tsuchiura Castle structure. The Yagura-mon gate and the East and West Turrets are particularly noteworthy, offering a tangible connection to traditional Japanese castle architecture. Another highlight is the natural heritage; the park is home to a massive Chiran (Shii) tree, a natural monument estimated to be approximately 500 years old. Exploring the wide-open lawns, the ancient stone walls, and the surrounding moats allows visitors to visually understand the defensive structure and layout of a classic Japanese castle.
The scenery of Kamejo Park changes beautifully with the seasons. It is most famous during the spring, when it becomes a premier destination for cherry blossom viewing (Sakura). We highly recommend visiting on a mild spring afternoon to witness the stunning contrast between the delicate pink blossoms and the dark, historic wooden structures. The changing colors of the seasonal foliage and the shifting light throughout the year also provide a constantly evolving landscape.
