Kakitagawa Park, located in Shimizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a beautiful sanctuary nurtured by the abundant spring water of Mt. Fuji. The Kakitagawa River is a designated National Natural Monument and is celebrated as one of the 'Three Most Clear Streams in Japan.' The pure water, which filters through the volcanic lava layers of Mt. Fuji over many years, emerges as a true masterpiece of nature. From the observation decks, visitors can witness the 'spring vents' where crystal-clear water continuously surges forth, providing a profound sense of refreshment and tranquility.
The origin of the Kakitagawa River lies in the porous layers of the 'Mishima Lava Flow' caused by ancient volcanic eruptions. Rain and snow falling on Mt. Fuji become groundwater, traveling through these lava layers for approximately 26 to 28 years before finally surfacing. This pure water has long supported local life; historically, textile mills even utilized these springs. Today, the water remains an essential resource for drinking, industrial, and agricultural use in the region. A deep respect for these natural blessings is deeply rooted in the local community.
The greatest attraction is the view of the 'spring vents' seen from the 1st and 2nd observation decks. The sight of water constantly surging upward is breathtaking. The 'Blue Hole'—a mystical, deep blue area of the water—changes its expression depending on the sunlight, making it a highly photogenic spot. You can also observe white pebbles dancing in the water, which are believed to be remnants of an eruption from about 3,200 years ago. Additionally, the park features a well-maintained boardwalk (Yatsuhashi) that allows you to walk closely with the water and the surrounding nature.
While beautiful year-round, the park is especially popular in summer as a place to find 'coolness.' Because the water temperature remains stable, it is a perfect destination for a refreshing stroll during hot months. The scenery also shifts with the time of day: bright daylight highlights the incredible transparency and sparkling surface of the water, while the quiet hours of morning and evening offer a more serene and meditative atmosphere. Be sure to enjoy the changing colors of the greenery and the shifting light through the seasons.
There are many ways to connect with nature here. Beyond viewing the scenery from the decks, you can visit the Spring Water Plaza to actually dip your feet into the water and feel its invigorating coldness—a luxurious way to experience nature's energy directly. The surrounding 'Spring Water Path' is also ideal for walking while listening to the sounds of the flowing water. It is a perfect destination for nature observation and landscape photography.
Near the park is the 'Shimizu Elementary School Teaching Garden,' a nature-rich area used for local education where children can observe seasonal changes. Other nearby spots like Marike Park and Honjoyama Park also offer great opportunities to enjoy the natural environment of Shimizu Town, making for a comprehensive nature tour.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes suitable for strolling. Benches are available throughout the park for resting. To protect this precious environment, please take all trash home with you and refrain from any actions that might harm the spring water. Please note that while parking is available, it cannot be reserved in advance.
