Kajo Park is a sprawling urban park covering approximately 35.9 hectares of the former Yamagata Castle site, a nationally designated historical site. Once used as the grounds for the 32nd Infantry Regiment of the Yamagata Infantry, it is now a vast green space open to citizens and tourists alike. The name "Kajo" (Mist Castle) reflects its historical identity, and the castle's distinctive structure is clearly visible even from satellite imagery, making it a true symbol of Yamagata City.
Yamagata Castle was established by Mogami Yoshihiro, one of the most prominent feudal lords of the Tohoku region. In 1986, parts of the Ninomaru and Sannomaru areas were designated as national historical sites. Following World War II, the military facilities located on the former castle grounds were transferred to Yamagata City, and the area was opened as a public park in 1949. Since then, a long-term project to reconstruct the castle has been underway. Significant milestones include the completion of the Higashi Otemon Gate in 1991 and the Honmaru Ichimonji Gate and Great Bridge in 2006, gradually restoring the castle to its former glory.
The park is dotted with reconstructed historical gates and bridges. Notable landmarks include the "Ninomaru Higashi Otemon Gate," completed in 1991, and the "Honmaru Ichimonji Gate and Great Bridge," reconstructed in 2006. A highlight of the park is the imposing equestrian statue of Lord Mogami Yoshihiro, which serves as a powerful visual representation of the area's history. Additionally, the park houses cultural-historical buildings such as the Yamagata City Local Museum (formerly the main building of the Saiseikan Hospital), where visitors can experience the coexistence of historical architecture and natural beauty.
The changing seasons offer unique charms to the park. From early to mid-April, the area becomes a stunning destination for cherry blossom viewing as many trees bloom in full glory. In winter, the park often hosts special events like the "Winter Festival Yamagata Winter Fireworks in Kajo Park." As an urban park, it is perfect for a relaxing daytime stroll while enjoying the scenery that harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding cityscape.
With its vast grounds, visitors can enjoy walking through the castle ruins and observing historical features like stone walls, moats, and reconstructed gates up close. The park also serves a recreational purpose, featuring sports facilities such as tennis courts, a kyudo (archery) range, and open exercise areas. Cultural enthusiasts can also participate in local initiatives, such as stamp rallies centered around the historical buildings of the area.
The area surrounding the park is a cultural hub, home to the Yamagata Prefectural Museum, the Yamagata City Local Museum, and the Mogami Yoshihiro History Museum. These institutions are perfect for those wishing to deepen their understanding of local history. The park's excellent accessibility—within walking distance from JR Yamagata Station—makes it easy to combine a visit here with other sightseeing in the city center.
