Kaiseizan Park is a large-scale comprehensive park located in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, where urban nature and history harmonize beautifully. Spanning an area of approximately 30.3 hectares, the park features the stunning Isuzu Lake at its heart. The most breathtaking season is spring, when approximately 1,300 cherry trees, including some of the oldest Somei-yoshino varieties in Japan, bloom and paint the lakeside in shades of pink. In April 2024, the park underwent a significant renewal, including the reopening of cafes, gardening shops, and improvements to the rose garden. This evolution has created an even more attractive space where visitors of all generations can relax in nature.
The history of this park dates back to the reclamation of the Asaka area during the Meiji era. In 1873, the land was developed by the 'Kaiseisha,' a private organization founded by local merchants in Koriyama, and Isuzu Lake was created as an irrigation pond as part of this project. In 1878, approximately 4,000 cherry trees were planted by the organization. The existing Somei-yoshino trees are considered among the oldest in Japan. These trees and Isuzu Lake were recognized in 2016 as part of a Japan Heritage site, deeply connecting the park to the region's cultural history. The landscape has also evolved over time, having once hosted a horse racing track during the area's development.
The greatest charm of the park lies in its seasonal flora and lakeside scenery. In spring, the blooming cherry blossoms adorn the lake, while in autumn, the rose garden offers a spectacular display of colorful roses. The newly renovated areas feature modern cafes and gardening boutiques, allowing you to enjoy food and shopping while immersed in nature. The park is also popular with families, featuring a dedicated area called 'Lucky Park,' inspired by the Pokémon character Lucky. Walking around the perimeter of Isuzu Lake offers a peaceful experience, watching the light reflect off the water and the gentle movement of the fountains.
Spring (March to April) is the most spectacular season when the 1,300 cherry trees are in full bloom. The peak viewing period is typically from early to mid-April, making a visit during this time essential. In the summer/autumn (specifically June), you can enjoy the beautiful blooms in the renovated rose garden, with the peak season usually occurring in early to mid-June. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to see the sunlight reflecting beautifully off the lake surface. Taking a break at one of the newly renovated cafes is also a wonderful way to experience the changing seasons.
At Kaiseizan Park, the primary activities involve strolling through nature and admiring seasonal flowers. In the renovated areas, you can enjoy relaxing at a cafe or browsing for gardening-related goods. The park also includes sports facilities, making it a popular spot for locals to stay active. Whether it is a brisk walk through historical landscapes or a relaxing moment by the lakeside, the park offers a precious opportunity to disconnect from daily life and reconnect with nature.
The area surrounding the park is rich in culture, with the Koriyama City Hall, Koriyama General Gymnasium, and the Koriyama Literature Forest Museum nearby. Additionally, relaxation-focused facilities like 'Super Sento Yuyu Land' are located in the vicinity, allowing you to create a complete travel plan by enjoying a hot spring soak after your walk in the park. The area is well-integrated with local life, making it easy to enjoy a day of sightseeing and local exploration.
Since the park is quite large, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing clothing suitable for the season. When visiting for cherry blossoms in spring or roses in summer, a hat to block the sun and a light jacket for temperature changes is helpful. While many of the new cafes and shops accept credit cards and transit IC cards, it is still wise to carry some cash for smaller vendors. Photography is generally free and encouraged, but please be mindful of other visitors. While the rose garden and many paths are designed with accessibility in mind, please watch your step when walking throughout the entire park.
