The Kanagi Kagura Collaboration Festival is a spectacular event held in Kanagi-cho, Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture. This festival showcases the artistry of Iwami Kagura, specifically featuring the local troupes from the Kanagi area alongside various other troupes from throughout Hamada. It is held annually on the third Sunday of March, offering a rare opportunity to witness the strength and vitality of traditional performing arts as the season of spring arrives.
Iwami Kagura is a traditional form of Shinto theatrical dance that has been passed down through generations in western Shimane Prefecture. This festival aims to preserve and pass on the intricate techniques and stories of Iwami Kagura to the next generation. Supported by the local community centered around the Kanagi-cho area, the event is much more than a performance; it is a vital pillar for the preservation of regional cultural identity.
The greatest draw of this festival is the diversity of performances. You can witness a wide range of legendary stories and dramatic plays, such as Jinmu, Yorimasa, Tenjin, Jinrin, Yamato Takeru, Michigaeshi, Kurozuka, and Oe-yama. Each troupe brings its own unique style, characterized by powerful movements and striking traditional costumes, allowing visitors to experience the full spectrum of Kagura's dramatic storytelling in one place.
The event takes place every year on the third Sunday of March. The doors open at 9:00 AM, with performances starting at 9:30 AM and concluding around 3:45 PM. Since the performances begin early in the morning, we recommend arriving at the Kanagi General Gymnasium (A Arena) promptly to secure a good view. The bright spring atmosphere adds a wonderful touch to the energetic performances.
Beyond watching the dances, visitors can engage directly with the culture. The Kagura Experience Corner offers a unique chance to touch upon the process of making traditional tools or learning about the intricate process of wearing the costumes. Additionally, a lively bazaar area will be set up, featuring various food stalls and local refreshments, adding to the festive community atmosphere.
The venue, 'Fureai Gym - Kanagi (Kanagi General Gymnasium A Arena),' is located in the heart of Kanagi-cho.
