Located in Kajiyamachi, Kagoshima City, the Ishin Furusato Kan is a historical museum centered on the Meiji Restoration, a pivotal turning point in Japanese history. The Kajiyamachi area is renowned for producing many influential figures of the era, such as Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi. Inside the museum, visitors can visually capture the intensity and movement of history through sophisticated audio-visual presentations and the use of life-sized robots.
The museum opened in 1994. The Kajiyamachi area is deeply connected to the era spanning from the Meiji Restoration to the Russo-Japanese War. Many leaders who contributed to Japan's modernization were born in this vicinity, including Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi (the three great statesmen of the Restoration), as well as Admiral Togo Heihachiro, General Oyama Iwao, and Prime Minister Yamamoto Gonnohyoe. The region holds such significant cultural weight that the famous novelist Ryotaro Shiba once remarked that the entire period from the Meiji Restoration to the Russo-Japanese War seemed to have unfolded within this single town.
The museum is divided into two primary exhibition areas: the "Hero's Path" on the 1st floor and the "Ishin Path" on the B1 level.
On the 1st floor, the "Hero's Path," you can explore themes such as the life of Atokime (Tensho-in), the traditional Shoju education system of the Edo period, and the concept of "Satsuma looking at the world." Exhibits include models of the Shohei Maru ship, displays related to the roots of the Japanese flag, and documents regarding figures like Saigo Takamori.
On the B1 level, the "Ishin Path" offers a more immersive experience. This area features a detailed model of the Kajiyamachi area accompanied by dramatic audio-visual performances. The life-sized robots representing Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi are the centerpieces, bringing the dynamic side of history to life.
While there are no major seasonal changes, it is highly recommended to check the drama performance schedule before visiting. The B1 level features the "Ishin Path" (7 times a day) and "Satsuma Student, Heading West" (6 times a day). Aligning your visit with these times ensures a deeper experience. The museum also attracts many visitors during periods of high interest in Japanese history, such as when historical dramas (Taiga dramas) are being broadcast.
The highlight is the drama performance in the Ishin Experience Hall on the B1 level. The life-sized robots create a sense of realism, making it feel as if historical figures have appeared right before your eyes. Additionally, the thematic exhibition rooms allow you to learn about specific events like the Shuseikan project, the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance, the Restoration of Imperial Rule, and the movement to overthrow the Shogunate, providing a profound understanding of Japan's social and political evolution.
The area surrounding the museum is dotted with monuments marking the birthplaces of famous historical figures. Exploring the Kajiyamachi area after your museum visit allows for a more three-dimensional understanding of the history.
