Kagikake Pass is a premier observation point located on the southern side of Mount Daisen (Daisen-san), spanning the border between Efu Town in Hino District and Daisen Town in Saihaku District, Tottori Prefecture. Situated at an altitude of approximately 900 meters, its most striking feature is the dramatic contrast between the rugged, steep rock faces of the Daisen south wall and the sprawling, lush beech forest at its base. As a key point on a scenic driving route through one of the largest beech forests in Western Japan, the landscape offers a constantly changing expression of nature depending on the time of year you visit.
The name "Kagikake Pass" carries a fascinating historical origin. It is said that travelers, pilgrims heading to Daisen-ji Temple, and local farmers or laborers would hang small branches shaped like hooks (kagi) on trees to pray for safe travels and good fortune. Another legend suggests that during the "Jusan-mairi" tradition—a rite of passage for 13-year-old boys visiting Mount Daisen—small branches shaped like keys were offered to stone statues. Thus, the pass has long been cherished as a place of prayer and protection for travelers.
From Kagikake Pass, you can witness the dynamic and powerful scenery of the Daisen South Wall. The massive, steep mountain face, with its exposed rock, presents a different character depending on the angle from which it is viewed. In winter, the summit may be covered in snow, offering a completely different aesthetic. A short 5-minute drive from the pass leads to the Kiyatazawa Stream, where you can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the forest while listening to the gentle murmur of the river and the sounds of birds.
