The Kaga Honda Museum is a specialized institution located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of samurai culture. It houses the prestigious collection of the Kaga Honda family, who served as high-ranking officials (Karo) of the Kaga Domain. The collection is remarkably diverse, featuring ancestral armor, helmets, swords, and spears, as well as household utensils and historical documents. These artifacts provide a vivid window into the daily lives and cultural sophistication of the samurai during the Edo period.
The lineage of the Kaga Honda family traces back to Honda Masanobu, a key figure under the Tokugawa Shogunate, specifically through his son Honda Masashige. As high-ranking vassals granted a 50,000-koku status within the Kaga Domain, the family played a significant role in regional history. The museum originally opened in 1973 as the 'Hanro Honda Collection Hall' to showcase approximately 1,000 items from the family's private collection. Today, it operates as the Kaga Honda Museum, situated within the grounds of the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of History, continuing its mission to preserve and present this rich heritage.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is the collection of traditional weaponry. Visitors can observe the intricate craftsmanship of exquisitely made armor, helmets, and swords, allowing for a direct connection to the equipment used by warriors of the era. Additionally, the museum holds precious items bestowed by the Maeda clan and significant historical documents. A particularly fascinating aspect is the legend surrounding the 'Murasame no Tsubo' (the Jar of Fifty Thousand Koku), which is said to have been named by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, serving as a testament to the family's high status and historical prestige.
The museum is open from 9:00 to 17:00. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to better appreciate the fine details and textures of the armor and historical artifacts. Please note that from November to February, the museum is closed on Thursdays. Additionally, the museum is closed during the New Year holidays (December 29th to January 3rd) and during certain periods of exhibition changes. Checking the schedule in advance is highly recommended.
