The Kabi Mega-Rock Formations, located in the Noda district of Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture, is a spectacular site where nature has sculpted massive rock formations. Giant rocks, some reaching 4m in height and 30m in circumference, are scattered across the hills, offering an overwhelming presence that captivates every visitor. The most striking feature is the "onion-like structure" (onion skin texture) visible on the rock surfaces. This unique shape is the result of thousands of years of physical and chemical erosion, creating concentric, spherical patterns. It is a rare and breathtaking sight that allows you to feel the raw power of nature up close.
The origins of these massive stones are deeply rooted in geological history. The rocks are composed of quartz-bearing pyroxene andesitic welded tuff, likely formed by volcanic eruptions more than 110,000 years ago. This makes the site significantly older than many other geological structures in the surrounding region. Beyond its geological importance, the site has long been a place of spiritual significance. A deity known as "Kabi Kannon" (or Iwano Kannon) is enshrined here, blending the awe of natural wonders with local religious traditions and history.
The primary draw is the collection of massive rocks nestled within the lush greenery. As you observe the rocks, you can see the intricate, concentric patterns formed over eons, showcasing the exquisite beauty of natural sculpture. At the highest point of the hill, there is a wooden observation deck. From this vantage point, you can enjoy a panoramic view of both the massive rock formations and the majestic mountains of Northern Satsuma. The three-story structure of the observatory allows for a multi-dimensional view of the vast natural landscape.
As an outdoor natural site, it is accessible throughout the year. The site is particularly beautiful during bright daylight hours when sunlight filters through the trees, highlighting the textures of the rocks and the vibrant colors of the surrounding greenery. Because the foliage and plant life change with the seasons, the landscape offers a different expression every time you visit. We recommend visiting during the daytime to clearly observe the geological details while walking along the well-maintained paths.
This is an ideal destination for nature walks and forest bathing. Visitors can enjoy a geological stroll, observing the textures and shapes of the rocks closely while following the established paths and stairs. The observation deck offers a moment of tranquility to contemplate the vastness of the local topography. It is a perfect place to experience the quiet majesty of a landscape shaped by time.
The surrounding area is rich with local culture and natural beauty. Nearby, you can find hot spring facilities like "Jusan Bugyo Onsen" and local spots like "Nodago Mura Okoshiya" to experience regional food and culture. The site is easily accessible by car from JR Izumi Station, making it a great addition to a broader Kagoshima sightseeing itinerary.
Since the site is located on a hilly, natural terrain, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and casual clothing. While paths are maintained, there are stairs and uneven surfaces. As this is a natural park and a historical site, please practice environmental conservation by taking your trash with you.
