Jusho Seino Sato is a beautiful 'Satoyama' (traditional rural landscape) located in the Oishi Ryumon hills of Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, where nature and human craftsmanship coexist in perfect harmony. This village is managed by the renowned traditional Wagashi brand 'Kanou Takasumi-an.' The vast grounds are adorned with seasonal flora such as cherry blossoms, plum, camellia, and hydrangeas, alongside native plants like chestnut and red pine, allowing visitors to feel the subtle shifts of the Japanese seasons. Upon passing through the traditional 'Nagaya Gate' at the entrance, you will find the Sukiya-style main building, Wagashi workshops, and charming dining areas and tea rooms, offering a peaceful escape from the bustle of daily life.
This area has long cherished its natural landscape while nurturing the sophisticated culture of Wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets). Wagashi is a vital part of Japanese culture, expressing the essence of the seasons, and Jusho Seino Sato serves as a center for preserving this spirit today. The architecture and facilities, including traditional Sukiya-style buildings and renovated folk houses, reflect a deep-rooted Japanese aesthetic. The village offers diverse experiences depending on when you visit. The scenic walking paths are lined with hundreds of thousands of seasonal wildflowers, creating a vibrant natural route. At the 'Seikan-kyo' tea room, you can experience the refined culture of tea and Wagashi. At the 'Sanju-tei' restaurant, you can enjoy 'Jusho Seino Kaiseki'—a seasonal multi-course meal—while surrounded by the gentle light filtering through the trees. Other facilities include 'Bakery & Café Noza' for coffee and bread, Wagashi shops, and 'Toubou Ju-ku' where pottery-making takes place, offering a rich variety of culinary and cultural activities.
Each season brings a new face to the village. Spring offers cherry and plum blossoms, early summer brings hydrangeas, and autumn features chestnuts and vibrant foliage. The seasonal Kaiseki meals and limited-edition Wagashi are special treats that can only be enjoyed during their specific time of year. While most people enjoy walking in the daylight, it is highly recommended to check the operating hours of specific facilities in advance.
Beyond sightseeing, you can engage deeply with Japanese culture. You can experience a formal tea ceremony at the tea room, or try your hand at traditional pottery at 'Toubou Ju-ku.' Additionally, you can explore the culture through taste by enjoying seasonal-themed meals or purchasing local bread and sweets. Jusho Seino Sato is situated in the rich natural environment of Otsu, near Lake Biwa. The surrounding area features historical landscapes and beautiful views of the lake, making it an ideal base for exploring Shiga Prefecture. The peaceful Satoyama scenery blends beautifully with nearby tourist spots, making it a wonderful destination for a scenic drive or a leisurely stroll.
Since much of the experience involves walking through nature, comfortable clothing and walking shoes are highly recommended. Payments can be made via cash or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc.). Some facilities, such as the 'Sanju-tei' restaurant and the tea rooms, require advanced reservations (ideally 3 days in advance). Please note that collecting plants or bringing outside food/drinks (except for water/beverages) is prohibited. Pets are generally not allowed, with the exception of service animals. For accessibility, 5 wheelchairs are available at the main information center (traditional folk house).
