Jozankei Onsen is a renowned hot spring destination located in Minami-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido. Situated within the scenic Shikotsu-Toya National Park, the hot spring town stretches along the valleys formed by the Toyohira and Shirai Rivers. The waters are characterized by a sodium chloride composition, with high temperatures ranging from 60°C to 80°C and a high discharge rate of 8,600 liters per minute. With a history spanning over 160 years, it is conveniently located only about an hour's drive from the center of Sapporo.
The history of this hot spring area dates back to its discovery in 1866 (Keio 2). The name is said to be derived from the monk Bisen Jozan, who discovered the hot springs. The local culture is deeply rooted in history, with the Jozankei Local Museum showcasing tools and artifacts used by former residents to preserve the local way of life. Additionally, the Iwato Kannon-do temple was established in 1936, featuring 33 statues of Kannon housed within a 120-meter-long cave, built to pray for the souls of those lost during the construction of the road connecting Otaru and Jozankei.
The hot spring town offers a unique blend of natural formations and cultural elements. Near Tsukimi Bridge, you will find Jozan Gensen Park, which commemorates the discovery of the hot springs and features footbaths, handbaths, and the 'Ontama no Yu' station where you can cook hot spring eggs. Throughout the town, you will encounter charming 'Marchen Kappa' statues, and at Futami Park, the famous 'Kappa King' statue stands as a landmark.
