The Jogasaki Coast is a scenic area located in the southeast of Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture, designated within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. It was formed by lava flows from the eruption of Mt. Omuro approximately 4,000 years ago. The coastline is characterized by rugged cliffs and a dynamic landscape facing the Sagami Sea. The area features the 'Jogasaki Picnica Course' and the 'Jogasaki Nature Study Path,' both spanning about 9km, allowing visitors to observe the intricate formations of nature up close.
This unique topography was created when lava from the eruption of Mt. one of the Izu Eastern Volcanic Group, filled the coastline for about 2km. Culturally, the area is famously associated with the lyrics of the Showa-era song 'Jogasaki Blues,' written by the renowned lyricist Tetsuo Hoshino. The song was released in 1968, coinciding with the completion of the Kadowaki Suspended Bridge and the Picnica Course. Today, several monuments dedicated to the song can be found on-site. The surrounding area also holds historical depth, with sites like Renchaku-ji Temple, which is connected to the history of the Buddhist monk Nichiren.
The most iconic spots at Jogasaki Coast are the Kadowaki Suspended Bridge and the Kadowaki Lighthouse. The Kadowaki Suspended Bridge is 48 meters long and approximately 23 meters high, serving as a major highlight of the coastal walking path. The Kadowaki Lighthouse functions as an observation deck, offering a 360-degree panoramic view. From the lighthouse, you can see the Izu Islands and the Amagi Mountain Range. Additionally, the walking paths allow visitors to observe unique geological features such as potholes created by wave erosion.
Nature changes beautifully with the seasons. In June, you can enjoy hydrangeas, while July brings blooms like Hama-kanzo and lilies. In autumn, flowers such as sea aster and pachysanthes appear. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to witness the striking contrast between the blue Sagami Sea and the dark, dramatic cliffs.
Beyond walking the nature trails, the surrounding area is a hub for marine activities. The nearby Tuto Fishing Port is a popular spot for scuba diving. During certain seasons, you might witness squid spawning, and there are even opportunities for whale watching to see sperm whales and dolphins. The coastal paths serve as an excellent way to observe the raw power of coastal erosion and geological formations.
There are many diverse attractions near Jogasaki Coast. Mt. Omuro offers breathtaking views from its summit, while nearby Lake Ikki, Komuro Park, and Sakura-no-Sato provide perfect environments to enjoy the natural beauty of the Ito area. Near Tuto Fishing Port, you can also experience local maritime culture and historical fishing structures.
Because the walking paths include rocky terrain, stairs, and a suspended bridge, sturdy walking shoes (such as sneakers or hiking shoes) are essential. The footing can be unstable in certain areas. While some English signage exists, most information is in Japanese. To protect the environment, please do not remove plants or rocks. For safety, always stay on the designated paths to avoid the dangerous cliffs.
