Joetsu City Aquarium Umigatari is a municipal aquarium located in Gochi, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. Following a major renewal in June 2018, it was reborn under its current name. Situated along the scenic coast of the Sea of Japan, the facility houses approximately 300 species and 45,000 individual marine organisms. A standout feature is the Magellanic penguin exhibit, which boasts one of the largest populations in the world, alongside dynamic and popular bottlenose dolphin performances that draw visitors from far and wide.
The origins of this institution trace back to 1934, maintaining a long-standing tradition of marine-related-education and display. After the extensive renovation in 2018, it emerged as the modern "Umigatari." The structure consists of three floors and serves as a vital center for both public exhibition and the study of marine life, deeply rooted in the local community and the natural history of the region.
Inside the museum, you will find the "Magellanic Penguin Museum," a dedicated space where you can observe a large number of these penguins in a naturalistic setting, offering a close look at their unique ecology. Another highlight is the bottlenose dolphin show, an energetic performance that showcases the intelligence and agility of the dolphins, providing a truly immersive experience.
