The Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse is a site of immense historical and cultural value, situated at the tip of Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. It boasts the highest light tower among stone lighthouses in Japan and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Recognized as one of the '100 Best Lighthouses in the World' and one of the '50 Best Lighthouses in Japan,' it is meticulously maintained as an A-rank preservation lighthouse. The structure stands majestically within the scenic landscape of the Oki and Daisen National Park, creating a dynamic silhouette against the backdrop of the Sea of Japan.
The history of this lighthouse dates back to its construction in 1900 (Meiji 33). It first lit its lamp on April 1, 1903 (Meiji 36). Designed by Akihiro Ishibashi, it is a masterpiece of Japanese design and construction. Built using tuffaceous sandstone from the local Moriyama area in Yasugi District, the structure has withstood wind and snow for over a century upon a base of columnar jointed quartz porphyry. The technology has evolved over time, such as the use of 1,500W incandescent lamps in 1918. Following seismic reinforcement work between 1993 and 1994, the lighthouse solidified its status as a modern heritage site of Japan, eventually being designated as an Important Cultural Property in 2022.
The greatest attraction is the 'observation lighthouse' function, which allows visitors to climb inside the structure. From the top of the lighthouse, you can enjoy an unobstructed, panoramic view of the Sea of Japan. The architecture itself is fascinating, featuring a double-wall structure with bricks on the inside and stone on the outside, showcasing its incredible durability. The adjacent 'Lighthouse Museum' houses precious materials regarding the history, function, and role of the lighthouse, allowing for a deep dive into its technical aspects. Seeing the massive structure designed for a first-order lens, which earned it a place among the world's best, is a must.
The scenery surrounding the lighthouse changes beautifully with the seasons. The charm of the surrounding scenic area is enjoyable year-round. During the bright daylight hours, the contrast between the blue Sea of Japan and the white lighthouse is striking, making it an ideal time for photography. While public access is primarily during the daytime, the changing atmosphere of the landscape provides a different experience depending on the weather and time of day.
Beyond just sightseeing, you can experience the structural integrity of this historical building. Climbing the interior of the lighthouse is possible for those aged middle school and above. As footwear is strictly prohibited inside, the process of removing your shoes and ascending through the historic interior to the very top is a unique and precious experience. Additionally, the museum offers a chance to learn about the technical expertise used to protect maritime routes.
The lighthouse is located within the Oki and Daisen National Park, surrounded by rich natural beauty. The area around Hinomisaki offers wonderful walking paths to enjoy the coastal scenery. It is common to visit this site as part of a broader Izumo sightseeing route that combines historical architecture with natural landscapes.
